Are Nikon screens scratch resistant (if you look after them), or do most people use the OEM plastic covers? It's just the review image on the LCD is so much brighter and clearer without the cover on, but I don't want to risk damaging the LCD surface unnecessarily.

No, they're not scratch resistant, hence why Nikon put those clumsy big plastic covers on the LCDs on their more expensive models. If you don't like the standard protector the best option is a GGS glass one for about £7 from most of the HK dealers

They are very scratch-resistant - the D3's I have here have been out here for three months and have no marks on the screens at all...none, zero, zilch...
I admit though I feel uncomfortable with them looking so...naked...

Hoodman screen covers are £25 though...and I'd need 4 of them...

edit: D3 and D3x no longer come with screen protectors for this very reason...

Now use the CGS thin glass type, but have also used the plastic stick on film ones too

Well worth it to protect the original LCD

In fact got a 3in Fuji one going spare if you want it as a freebie, more than happy to stick it an envelope

Cheers

The screens on the D3 may be to a different spec to the ones on the cameras owned by us mere mortals though, Rob ;)

Check with Nikon how much a replacement screen is, as the Canon ones are only about a tenner, so just not worth get a protector.

had a canon 1000d for 9 months or so and never managed to put a scratch on it , i now have a 450d about the same age and that is unscratched , i wear glasses as well :)

I now use a GGS cover on my 50D. I can't even tell it's there.

I used to use the plastic screen protectors but they kept peeling off and turning 'milky' almost. I have just ordered a GGS glass protector for my 450D from eBay for £5 delivered.

I asked when I was using D2x bodies - £25...for the plastic cover, that is...

The Hoodman ones for the D3/D3x are identical to the Nikon ones, right down to the small hole in the bottom-left corner for the bit of string to go through...

For a replacement screen it'll be £200+, I expect...

I've used the self adhesive plastic screen protectors on every DSLR I've owned - certainly helped when it came to resale, people feel more confident buying a camera that doesn't have scratches I think....

Cameras with scrapes and marks are the best ones.........they have been used

I agree 100% - just look at all these ads - 'had it two years 7,000 clicks - like new' what on earth do they do with them? :D D3 doesn't need a protector - it's a pro! :)

Sorry excuse my ignorance but what is a GGS glass protector? I have a 450D and the LCD screen has a small scartch on the corner  I have bought the plastic screen covers before but never been really happy with them, so have just bought this:

Hopefully it will stop any further scrathes, but I would ideally like to buy a new LCD screen for the 450, any ideas where from and how much?

Cheers

Lee.

Edit: GGS glass protector found :bonk::clap: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GGS-LCD-Scree...s_RL?hash=item4148bd9998&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
