Lcd problem with 40d, please help.

Just got my second hand 40D off of Ebay(I know, I know!). It was from a private seller with Good feedback. 2 Problems I got. The first one was 'error 01', saying the lens contacts were dirty. Got it working after cleaning it in the camera's setup menu.

Took some pictures and they looked fine on the LCD, but as soon as you got any white light, it shows up flickering black patches instead of the light. Anybody had anything similar?

Just asked him for a refund, but I would consider getting it repaired if he pays the cost. Any suggestions?

Is the second issue flickering White and black not the highlights clipping switched on, can't remember which menu setting you should check but look online or in the manual if you have it.

From your description, the flickering black patches seems quite normal, it indicates areas of over exposure I.e blown highlights. Bright white light in an overall dark scene will produce blinkies and is normal.
 
If you got a manual with it pg157 highlight tone prioty could be enabled.

Secondly i would set the camera back to default pg44 getting rid of any settings the previous owner had done :thumbs:

Thanks guys. I will consult the manual and have a look to see what I can do about it. The mirrors looks quite dirty inside though. Do you have to get it sent away to fix?

Boom, headshot! It was enabled, but now I don't have a lens to test it. I will do later and keep you updated.

A bit of dust or dirt on the mirror won't affect image quality. I'd leave it alone but whatever you decide to do, don't attempt to clean it yourself.
 
I'd second not cleaning the mirror, it may look dirty but your probably seeing reflections of the autofocus bits.

I'd be a little concerned about the error01 but I'd clean the lens contacts in the body gently and see how it goes.

Try and borrow a lens and give a bit of a hammering and see how it behaves. Any probs then send it back, 40d's are becoming more available at reasonable prices now for private sales.
 
Spoke to the guy and it seems that the overexposure thing was the culprit as mentioned. Hopefully 'Error 01 Clean the lens contacts' was just some dirt on the lens I tried. Trying another one this week. Don't wanna get rid of the 40. Haven't used t yet, but I just love the look and feel of it!
 
The lens contact thing is just as likely to be the lens as the camera. Camera sounds fine to me. The only way to clean the lens contacts is manually on both the lens and camera body, there is no option in the camera to clean them.

I would be slightly miffed as the seller being accused of selling a dud, when in reality it sounds fine.

I did apologize profusely to him, but didn't accuse him of anything. You would've thought that the guy testing the camera would've known better, as he has had and still has, all the top end Canon cameras.....lol I assume the contacts are the few little pins sticking out the bottom? They look proper clean to me. The lens came straight off a 30d that he hasn't used for a while, so it could've been a bit dirty. And mind you, I only get 3 hours sleep a night on a weekend, so I wasn't that fresh this morning to think logically either!:bonk:
 
You can't always tell if contacts are clean as they might have a coat of grease or something similar on them. If the lens error persists, you could try DeOxit on the lens contacts (yes, the gold bits on the bayonet end of the lens), and on the contacts just inside the camera where the lens fits on. If the lens you tried was a 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM, it could be suffering from a known problem with the focus circuit. Although it's a known problem, Canon won't fix it, you'd have to pay for it yourself. Even if it wasn't the 17-85mm, it could still be a lens error, though.

The 40D is a great camera; I use one myself. It's a little old in the tooth and likes to have plenty of light, but can produce some very nice pictures.
 
Well, my other lens came today and it seems to be working fine! Thanks for all the help you guys!
