I've been trying to edit some pics but don't know how to do layers in photoshop. I can create a new layer but don't know how to manipulate the foreground so it appears on the background if that makes sense. Any advice?

It doesn't! If you tell us in detail what you are trying to do (and perhaps post the source pic) we might be able to offer more advice.

Honestly buy the photoshop layers book. Not only will you learn what layers are your processing will move forward leaps and bounds.

There's also many links on the web.

Ron Bigelow's articles are fantastic - check the link out and scroll down to layers.

I should add it sounds like you are trying to use a layer mask of some sort..... The above will explain layer masks and adjustment layers too.

As has already been asked ducky, please can you explain what it is you are trying to do. You'll get the possibility of a lot more help if you do that.

I don't quite know what you mean when you say you want the foreground so it appears in the background!!??

Can you explain please... ta.

You might like to have a look at Digital Photo magazine too - every month it has a cover CD packed with Photoshop tutorials

I cropped a picture and wanted to place it on another background which I thought meant putting it on another layer. I opened a new layer thinking I could move the image I could see on the menu on the left hand side in photoshop, up and on to the new layer but after a quick read of the link suggested by EOS JD I think my view of layers was a little awry to say the least. I edit my images without using layers but now realise this could degrade the original and leaves me with less options for further editing later.
Thanks for the advice and now I think I'll curl up and die:(
I am new to all of this and learn better with stuff like photoshop if I can see something demonstrated.

Go get that Digital Photo Magazine ;) You'll see real time Photoshop tutorials

OK, if I understand you correctly - you want to simply place a cropped section from an existing image, into another separate image yeah?

If so... simply create a selection rather than a crop - of the part of the image you want to replicate. Then there are several ways to do the remainder of this.. try

Layers > Create New Layer from copy
Drag that new layer onto the new image
Voila!

Does that meet what you're trying to accomplish?

Pressing ctrl J will copy the image to a new layer and if you make a selection first it will copy the selection to a new layer. Is that what you want to do?

Thanks for all the advice and for being so understanding with a new kid on the block, I really appreciate it.
My photoshop just crashed so will try your suggestion later Musicman. :)

Are you talking about layering two pictures? If so layer mask is probably your best bet
