A couple of weeks back I did a windows 8.1 install so that I could use Lightroom 5. The W8 pro install went through the 'upgrade' route of a fresh windows 7 install (no applications, updates or drivers at all) then Windows 8 and finally Windows 8.1, which was fully updated, latest drivers etc, then Lightroom, Libreoffice, Firefox, Opera, Irfanview, VLC - that's ALL in the way of applications. Running Windows defender from Microsoft as anti-malware. It's been OK until this weekend when I was told there was an update: first update installation attempt crashed, so I took the machine back through system restore, then updated on a fresh boot successfully.

However since then I've had Lightroom fall over twice: once when editing and once importing images. Last night I stepped back again with system restore to before the update and it's let me edit a number of images since without trouble. Has anyone else seen this issue?

What was the update ID (KB....). I can tell you if I have it installed.

Installed 8.1 so that you could use lr5?

When you say "fell over" did it just hang so you had to kill it. Crashed with an error (what was the error)? Anything in event logs?

@ Neil - it crashed. I've not got around to looking at the error logs, but I'll have a dig through later. Any idea where I'll find them (it's been a while since I had a winbox) and whether I can access them from my linux partition?

I had some stability problems with LR 5.0 on Win 8 but no issues at all with LR 5.3 on Win 8.1

Ditto re Win 8.1 / LR5.3, didn't actually install LR until I had updated the 8.0 to 8.1 (new yoga ultrabook). Mel

I use LR5.3 fine with Windows 7 x64, don't get why you upgraded to Windows 8

Long answer:
I bought a W8 'upgrade' download Christmas 2012 for an XP box, then changed the machine I wanted to upgrade (t'other is staying XP for now) but it refused to work for a new XP install. I borrowed a copy of W7 from a friend to provide a base that I knew it *would* install from, but didn't activate it because it belongs to another machine - that copy of 7 was never 'mine' to use and TBH I quite dislike 7 for the mungy pastel interface and slow performance. In terms of interface I prefer W8/8.1, and 8.1 seems much more responsive and cleaner to use than 7.

Short answer:
I don't own a copy of 7.

You're welcome. ;)

If I could run Lighroom under Linux then I'd not be using Windows, but as it is I quite like the W8 interface, especially with all the useless tiles cleared out off the start page and replaced with programs I use. Quite tempted to get a winpho next time round after this.

I've not had a single problem with LR5, and now 5.3 under Windows 8... both 8.0 and 8.1

Rock solid... not a single crash, pause, glitch... nothing.

I have a probelm exporting images with LR 5.3 and Windows 8.1, I posted this in another section but got no reply. When I select the images LR skips certain files, for example I had 125 to export but LR only did 96. None of the originals are missing or have been moved. If I click on the files that have been skipped they export with no problems but obviously that's a pain as it's hard to know which files LR has skipped. I never had trouble with LR2 which I was using before.

I have managed to get better results by doing the exporting in library view and not develop view but when exporting virtual copies it still seems to skip a few, very odd.

Thanks Pookey - that's good to know.

I'm quite a fan of Win 8/8.1
I'm no fan of that "Start" window's aesthetics but I am a fan of how quickly it starts/stops. I'm still using both Win7/Win8.1 and the latter is so much more responsive. It's faster over the network too.

I found the transition from Win7 to Win8.1 quite painless too.

That said, I'm sorry for being preachy and evangelical. I know everyone is different.

So I let it do the update again this w/e and it started crashing again. I'll try to post the .dmp files later if anyone can open and analyse them for me? One crash I got a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and the other a memory issue. Ran the memory test built into windows and it didn't report faults. Uninstalled the update by recovering to an earlier time and LR worked fine again.

I had a PC a few years back that would fall over under load (CounterStrike :D) but passed all memory checks etc, I eventually lowered the memory settings in the BIOS (below default values) and after that it was rock solid
