I've heard electromigration is a useful phenomenon to exploit if you want things to fail without doing anything to cause it.

Used to generate great profit for the Mastercare/Dixon's/Curry's partnerships in the 80s & 90s (allegedly) as anyone who bought any of their own-brand rubbish like Logik, Matsui etc. will testify. They barely lasted their initial guarantee period. A model followed by so many companies since . . .
 
Inadequate heatsinks in power supplies seem to be popular; allow the voltage regulator to gently simmer for 18-24 months, then *pop*.
