Lastolite Trigrip

Ok, this isn't studio, but it is lighting and I wasn't sure where to start the thread ...

I saw Joe McNally using the Lastolite Trigrip which can be held up with a lightstand bracket and it looks fantastic:-


But, it is crazy expensive.

Does anyone know of an equivalent, please?

Also, I'd appreciate some ideas on what size I'd need just for portraits, maybe half length?
 
That's McNally pushing Lastolite products.

The trigrip is great for one person, you can hold it in one hand and shoot by yourself.

By the time you've set up a stand and bracket, you could be using any old reflector. They'd all do the same job.
 
What I really like about it is how it attaches to a light stand, so we don't need an assistant or to have diffuser in one hand and camera in the other.

Would appreciate links to any alternatives, please?

As the others say though, Trigrip doesn't make sense unless you've got someone holding it to make use of the handle.

There is a bracket for the Trigrip which is shown in the video I linked. It's not for a reflector, it's for a diffusor. I have an arm like the one you link for a deflector. If this was used for a diffuser the arm would put a great big line of shadow across the subject.

My mistake, you could try a flexible arm with a clamp like these:

Aah my trigrip is ancient and doesn't have a spigot socket built in (as you were).

Mine are old too but I've not actually seen them on any models from Lastolite, is this just with the newer ones or the Chinese knock offs?
 
It appears that the trigrip from lastolite now comes in a kit with a grip (and Joes name on), but the knockoff products have a threaded hole in the handle.

Yes, there is a special bracket for the Trigrip. It's only £72, a bargain! The handle of the Trigrip fits into a holder on the bracket and is then held by a velcrose strap.

I'm just nervous about the diffuser I've bought being big enough.

How big is it, and what are you planning to do with it. I'm liking the knockoff trigrips, I might get one (the handle is knackered on my Lastolite one)
 
Whilst the cost is a bit much, you do get what you pay for. I have a few lastolite products now and they're very well made and the quality I have found to be excellent.

I bought the softbox you recommended Phil a while back but it was a little too big for me so went with the Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe which is a bit smaller. Whilst really quite expensive, it oozes quality. Alot sturdier, the fabrics are better quality too. Also have one of their pop up urban backgrounds too along with the tiny speedlight softbox, an air cushioned light stand which is uber cool and also one of the soft silver triflectors. Awesome awesome stuff.

Obviously none of that really helps the OP but just keep in mind that it may be worth investing in the real deal.

I've got a good mix too, my first Lastolite reflector is about 18 years old and still gets a workout sometimes, the newer Chinese knockoffs won't last nearly as long (but they're priced accordingly). OTOH my genuine trigrip's handle has disintegrated in about 5 years of light use. The handle on the Lastolite is just a lump of wood glued to the flexi frame. The Chinese knockoff with the tripod bush in the handle appears to have the handle bolted to the flexi frame, but the tripod bush is still the weak link.

The quality is good but £70 for a collapsible reflector with a handle? That kind of pricing just leaves room for the Chinese knock offs to eat their market.

Shouldn't there be a ton of diffuser flags/scrims with clamping wires out there for the film industry?

Mines 'Sunfire?' on one side, can I flog it as a classic?
