Lastolite Quik Bounce

Hi All,

I have been asked by a friend to take some photographs at her wedding later on in the year and was thinking about getting something like the quik bounce to help diffuse the flash a little.

I don't want anything too large as it has to be portable and not look too intrusive or too expensive as this is a hobby, not paid work, although I would want something that can be used again at other events (parties etc).

I may also get a cheap Hama flash bracket to get the flash off center.

Anyway - some advice if you will. Has anybody used the the Quik Bounce and what if so what are your thought? Are there any other (cheaper?) alternatives? Is it worthwhile getting the flash off center?

LM Quik Bounce is the single best flash accessory you can buy! I've posted as much often enough.

It works well - which is a good start . The degree of softening of the direct flash component is simply down to the size, but it's big enough to be effective at close range, for couples and small groups. And it raises the light above the camera by just the right amount. Plus of course it has the variable bounce facility.

Tip One - you can increase the direct softening marginally but usefully by setting the flash at minimum zoom which ensures the QB is filled right to the edges. Tip Two - zooming the flash head to max will put an extra stop or so through the top, and correspondingly one stop less out of the front, handy for higher ceilings. BTW I've never used it with just one flap open and I can't see when you'd want to.

It's versatile, and can be turned for vertical framing or bouncing off a wall in two seconds. Works outdoors too, without wasting precious light all over the place. It's efficient - light goes exactly where you want it, and nowhere else.

It folds flat

As far as I know, it's unqiue. I have several of these flash attachment type jobbies and the QB is the one I always use for fluid social situations. Usually on E-TTL and Av with high speed sync engaged so that it switches in and out automatically indoors/outdoors. If you need to, tweak the exposure and balance ratios with compensation on the gun (flash) and camera (ambient) You have lot of control with all those variable elements.

I wouldn't bother with a bracket for the QB. It's mainly for bounce-fill, and with that technique the main part of the light, the bounce bit, is of course off camera anyway, and fill-in usually looks best when it's on-axis. You can tilt the head to one side if you like, which moves it off-axis a few inches, but for those times when using it for softening direct flash with the flaps closed, I use a short dedicated cord and just hold it at arm's length, strobist style.

OK, that's pretty conclusive then! Thank you for taking the time to respond, I did search but couldn't find much - obviously being a numpty!

I think I'll order one then as it sounds pretty much perfect for what I want, cheers.
