Flash. And only half to one stop up on the background. Two is too much - it needs to be blown, but only just. Anything more just creates flare and eats away at the subject outline.

Ok ...I had watched a video and it said f16 on background and F8 on Subject (Mark Cleghorn Training 4 u

Mark does like to use f16, but I find f11 is fine for me.

Example, this was taken at f11 for the hilite and f8 for the girls

Hmmm makes me think! I need to try it ...thanks for that Martin

Best using two lights inside too, to get an even spread. Can be done with one - but can look uneven.

To improve single light performance, stick shiny foil down the side opposite the head.... being careful not to let any creases on the foil create hot spots in the direction of the background.

It is also recommended that you leave enough foil on the roll for the Sunday roast...

Yes no more than a stop extra on the background is good. Mark Cleghorn is in a large studio space usually so keeping the subjects well away from the background.

+1 stop on the background works for me.

Re WB, Custom White Balance would be best if you have a grey card.

Yes i have a grey card Jim ...Thanks for the tip ...Just need to bloody learn how to fold it!! not the grey card the Hilite Lol ...Sometimes i do it first time ...other times it takes me ages :(

After you do it a few times it becomes very easy. I can get it folded in a short few seconds.

Long end on the floor and stretch arms along pull in one arm at a time. It should just curl up into a circle.

I have watched the video's ...and sometimes first time ...other times the steel bends and it goes all over the place ...like you guys say it's practice

I was at Mike Weeks Event photographers' jamboree this week.

Best bit of it was watching about half a dozen people showing off their hilite folding skillz.

Mike - next time video that, sell the video, retire.

LOL.. sad, but I enjoyed that too.

Keith from Lastoilite showed his self-closing technique - which I couldn't master - whereby a couple of simple turns, drop the edge of the Hilite to the floor and it folds itself.

Folding a 'new' hilite is difficult, I've folded a range of them in the last month, after a few folds, the steels seem perfectly aligned, and you can use the basic technique shown in the instructions to fold it with ease.

My own Hilite which is new was impossible to fold the conventional manner, the metal rod just twisted the opposite way and once it had done that, it had a tendancy to want to do that again and again..

I then tried the other methods I found from Lastolite on youtube, and found the one where you keep the far corner on the ground, and just walk one corner up, and over the top towards the one on the ground works 100% of the time even if the steels are slightly twisted or 'new'..

After a few opening/closings it's now able to be easily folded using the normal technique.. but I still tend to use the walk over method, as I find that easier for my back..

Phil-t, pls can you post a link to the "walk over" method YouTube video? I gave up trying to fold mine back after a couple of hours. The beast now dominates my living room in an upright position waiting for the next time I summon up courage to re-attempt.
Thx

Haha I had this problem on a shoot in someone's house, in the end I dragged it into their garden and finally managed it, (thank god they didn't live in a flat) it does get easier just takes a bit of practice and a cool head when it goes tits up :-)

I'm not sure if I have a funny one , but I have to fight to unfold it . Folding up again doesn't seem to be an issue .

And here i was thinking i was at fault ..lol... It's like getting a little monster out of the bag that refuses to go back :( do i regret buying it ....Hell yes!!!!
