Hi all,

I am considering buying this product for on-site portraiture where space is limited. What flash systems should I be considering to illuminate the hilite and also for key lighting?

Mods: please feel free to delete the old thread which is slightly different but served its purpose to redirect my questioning.

Morning Chris, go to the Lastolite website and look for Mark Cleghorn's tutorial vids. :)

Even shows you how to fold the blighter up again. (Makes it look a lot easier than it actually is!)

I bought the 7ft one and since they are actually best for head and 3/4 shots, I actually recommend the slightly smaller one, easier to handle, fits clients homes better and not so embarrasing when you have to drag it out of their house and shove it in the back of the car. :)

I'm thinking the Lencarta 2 head kit seems reasonable.

3 heads are better with a Hi-Lite... one for each side of the Hi-Lite and one as your key light for the subject. You can manage with lighting a single side of the Hi-Lite but it's not as easy to get it even.

aha! nice and even? what were your camera iso/shutter/aperture settings?

seems to work fine for me, I had it on the floor firing up at the back of the hilite. I was using 1/250 @ f2.8 ISO 100 with my two SB900's set to 1/16th (i think) and my 550EX set to 1/8 power... at least I think thats what it was

I will set it all up again and post up the shots and settings for you...

I use three Interfit 300W jobs.

Yes you can use a roll of white paper but then you need about 6ft of room between your subject and background so you don't get bleed off the background.

That's the whole point of the highlite, you can stick your subjects more or less up against it. You can also use it as a great big softbox :)

Yep and that is my primary requirement. The more I think about it, the less sense speedlights make. Yes they are nice and small and can be used outside of the Studio, but I'll be forever changing batteries and they may not be powerful enough. Even if I bought two more SB600s, and power supplies, I'm not far off the same cap ex for a Lencarta 200 starter kit, if not more!

I ordered hilite from fotosense on thursday paid extra for next day delivery and im still waiting not very good service also they are closed weekends so will phone them monday morning

I have 3 x SB600s now and this is working out quite nicely. A single SB600 illuminates the HiLite pretty well at 1/2 power, ISO 200, f8. However, I only have two groups to play with on the D700. Ideally I want group a for key, group b for fill and something else to trigger the other flash in the hilite. I'm thinking now that I should sell an SB600 and replace it with an SB80DX or something similarly powerful that has an optical slave mode.

I assume that will work based on James' posts above with the Canon flash in his HiLite.
