I have gradually over the past 6 months had enough of the lack of retail support for the Sony Alpha range. Many Camera outlets are now ready to sell you one of the new range but when it comes to supplies of extras lenses, Battery grips, etc. the only route for purchase is via the internet. This poses a big problem with me (and I assume many others on limited budget) as I need to be sure the bit of kit I purchase does what I want it to do. So I need to be able to hold and test the extras with my A100.

Well it looks like I'm gonna take the plunge, I have had some savings put aside to purchase new lenses but I have decided to use this to fund a switch ............:gag:.............to the dark side.

On a recent trip to a local camera shop I was able to try out a D300 and a number of lenses. It was  at first ...... click!

After much deliberation I have decided on a Nikon D300 Body w/Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm IF ED. I am likely to keep my Sony A100 as part/ex prices mean I will get very little for what is a perfectly good DSLR.

I have read with some interest the issue of Nikon UK only honouring UK kit and therefore I am looking for Camera shops Local/Internet based that TP members have been happy with the service and also managed to get a fair deal (I don't think it is always best to go for the cheapest deal as I tend to think it will cost you more in the long term). I have looked at the usual suspects Warehouse Express, AJ Purdy, London Camera Exchange, Jessops (pricey or what !!) and Dixons but a few others have come up (links on the TP website) purelygadgets.co.uk, simplyelectronics.co.uk, tekmo.co.uk. are 3 that look interesting. Of course I will contact Kerso but I would be interested in the experience of these others.

Any :help: from the TP'ers will be most welcome along with any C&C on my pic above and how it may be improve using a D300.

I'm a Sony user and know exactly where you're coming from. If, by some minor miracle, you can find somewhere that sells the OEM accessories, they are all way too expensive due to Sony pricing policies!! All the best with the switch, maybe someone from Sony will read this and SORT IT OUT. Maybe.

Chewy.... I can't even find a local store that has any Sigma lenses for the Sony Fit.....and I've been looking for about 6 months now.

Don't even talk to me at work if you buy a D300 unless you are willing to lend it to me :D

Its all your fault ...I'm in this mess....If you hadn't kept going on about how good Nikon is....I wouldn't have gone to try one out....:D ...should I ? shan't I.....oh I can feel the Dark Side .....calling

It's your fault for not buying Nikon years ago .

On the bright side you can borrow my SB800 when you need it aswell (although it will make you want to buy one aswell lol)

as a sony user also,i agree that sony lens etc are expensive and difficult to get hold of.i recently got rid of my A100,and got the A350 instead...i did this for 2 reasons....

1/i had invested in some sigma lens for the A100,and didn't want to have to sell everything and start over again(plus my missus would have had my nads on a plate)

2/i liked the look of the live view facility, and can see me using it in certain situations, plus i could get the battery grip for the 350,which isn't available for the 100.

i've managed to get the sigma lenses from my local camera shop, but only after them getting them in at my request...normally within 2-3 days if sigma have them in stock.

i sold my A100 on here in the for sale section,so it may be worth you considering doing the same...

good luck with the move to the dark side

Probably a bit late now if you're definitely switching, but there's a Sony centre of excellence @ London Camera Exchange Colchester. Is that far from you? Never been so can't vouch for it. Doesn't get round the expense of it though!

Stan

I originally went with Sony as I am long term Minolta user but I am planning to keep my Sony kit as I will only be able to get the 18-200 lens and I am just starting to get results with my Sigma 170-500mm. Surprisingly my wife is fully supporting me in this purchase as she knows how long and hard I've saved for new lenses only to be frustrated by the lack of local Sony based stock.

Chewy,

I phoned them earlier today on my quest to get a price and check for stock on the Nikon kit. Although I am super keen to get a D300 that won't mean I will skimp on the leg work and I was planning to visit them at the weekend if they get the delivery (ironic or what!! now I can't get a D300). I just get the feeling that all Camera manufacturers avoid supplying the Essex area:shrug:

Thanks  for the tip you never know I may be drawn back (I doubt it though) as I feel the D300 will allow me that much more to challenge my photography.

I got one of my recent aquisitions from there via a phone call, the lens was delivered the very next day so can't fault the costomer service that I received. Worth phoning to see what they have in stock.

Hammerhead not sure where abouts in Essex you are but T & B in Romford are good people to deal with, speak to Dennis the boss they sometimes price match Warehouse Express but give a much better service. good luck and welcome to the land of Nikon.

If I might suggest also, I understand why your buying the expensive body and cheapish lens, (I'd do it the other way round) but that particular Nikon zoom is a serious compromise In clarity, speed and ability compared to the more serious end of their collection.

May be buying a narrower range lens with higher clarity and abilities ... at the same price would be beneficial in the long run.

... I just don't want you to be disappointed with that glass in six months time, which could happen.

:)

Thanks for the advice all.

I have got a good price from Kerso so it looks likely that I will go that route (just whether I can hold back from buying it).

The beauty of looking at Nikon kit is that I have been able to try out the various lens options and the 18 -200 will give me what I consider a good all rounder.
