Okay, hear me out here. "I have my first wedding tomorrow" (I can hear the sighs now). This is for a friend (more sighs) but believe me when I say for at least the last 10 months I have advised the bride to get a professional, it is my honest opinion they are worth their weight in gold however, the budget just will not cover it. Put simply if I had not relented under immense pressure to do my best tomorrow then they would be relying on friends and family.

Accordingly I want to do my best for them and am reasonably confident with my equipment, D3s & 2 D90 bodies plus Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and 85 F1.4 plus other non prime lenses. sb600 speedlights.

I have insurance, (no contracts, this is a favour) I have itinerary and photo line ups lists. I have multiple memory cards batteries etc etc. I am okay at organising people and line ups and have two best men primed to help.

I had a minor wobble at the wedding rehersal yesterday evening when the vicar informed me I could only take one shot from the balcony at the back of the church, no flash and only during the first hymn, thus getting the backs and heads of the congregation. So basically no shots inside the church, that said I am confident I on the lighting of said photo.

However tonight I have just gone to do a recy on the marquee and practise with the lighting and flash and I just cant get it right. The marquee has black ceiling over the dance floor with 100's of tiny lights, a few uplighters and there will the DJ's lights too. There is also a black and white glossy dance floor.

Every shot I took tonight was just blown and I am beginning to wonder if for some shots of the dancing I would be better forgetting the flash (this limits me to shutter speed 200) and perhaps relying on the prime lenses and a high iso which the d3s handles well.

I'm more an equestrian photographer (we never use flash) but my comfort zone is catching moving items usually in poorly lit arenas.

I appreciate that each wedding, marquee and level of lighting requires a different approach, I am not looking for a one setting suits all, but I wondered if any experienced photographers had found the same difficulties and what approach they had taken.

Any help would be gratefully received. I hope to avoid most "first wedding negativity" because I have not taken this on lightly, I am more nervous than the bride!

Thanks in advance.

How are you triggering the SB600's? and on what setting?

hint... forget CLS, use manual

One SB unit on camera, and 2 up on stands either side of the band normally does the trick

You should be able to get higher sync speeds with the flash than 1/200 - I can with my D300 and SB600... off the top of my head it's called something like Auto FP (don't quote me :p)

EDIT: The above is assuming the flash is ON the camera :)

I've had vicars stipulate the same - As long as you don't shoot during the quiet bits, you can usually get away with a few extra shots - including the first kiss :)

How far did you take the flash compensation down? If the place was empty it will also behave differently once people are in there as the people will absorb the light a bit more.

Fast prime is a good idea though. I'd try a few with flash and some without during the actual event as it keeps your options open.

Regarding the church.. flash on the way in, and on the way out. Take the flash off in the ceremony, and use the lowest ISO you can hand hold at. Sit in at the front to one side, and be discrete. It's a shame you already have had the rules read to you... you have less wriggle room now

on camera and yes on manual (over and above that I am stuffed as I would not have a clue about speedlights on a stand). Thanks for your input.

Okay, I will have a look at that and yes on camera. I do intend to very diplomatically "steal" one or two pics in church but obviously without pictures in church I was relying even more on photos from the reception....

Okay, thank you, I will do that, I just wondered if by merely suggesting it I would be met with a wave of "no way"!! The fact that you have said give it a go has reduced my stress levels to merely hyperventilating status!

Getting them off the camera will pay you back grandly, but ideally you need triggers, and you dont want to be learning it on a job

How about bouncing it off a reflector? (AKA as anything else that will bounce your flash)

TBH if you have one sb600 on camera, start with TTL and adjust out

Hands up on that front, I am not going to be able to pull that one out the bag before tomorrow, thank you for the suggestion anyway.

I would not feel quite so bad if I knew I could got some wow shots in the church.

Still it could be worse....... it could always rain tomorrow as well! (not worth joking about)!

Remember, you have just about the best camera you can have at a reasonably high ISO. Just decide your limit

Good luck for the wedding! I'm also doing my first one today and like you, am extremely nervous!

AHH thank you, good luck too. Lost count of how many times I have been to the loo! Lol!

Mine went extremely well, although I'm suffering with a rather large hangover now!

The weather was atrocicious, with wind and rain, but thanks to a very well organised guest/assistant, I think I managed to capure all the group shots. The rest were simply a bonus!

I love it when a plan comes together. Good on you

only just flicked back on to this and see a few of you were kind enough to enquire how it went. It went ok thank you, I will pluck up the courage soon to put a few pictures up for your input. The dance ones came out ok and the b&g are happy with all of them. My problem is I am my own worst critic.

Thanks to every body who offered me help in my moment of need....it was very much appreciated!!
