Hi

Does anybody know much about Laser Printers? My mum runs a small Playgroup from home, which often means printing off letters and reports etc. At the moment we have a cheap all-in-one inkjet which she uses a bit but not too much due to the ink costs, so any photocopying she needs my dad does at work which is free but a hassle and time consuming. Due to all the H&S crap the amount of paperwork that gets printed is increasing weekly, so we seam to be using alot of ink recently!

I said we should buy a Laser printer, so she can print stuff and photocopy stuff easily, quickly and cheaply, without having to worry about running costs (mum is a bit tight with money!). It needs to be a colour one though, as it needs to print off everyday stuff like my sisters homework etc and it needs to be a all-in-one so it can scan and photocopy.

Does anybody know if this is a good idea? And what printer to go for. The only one I've looked at so far is this Brother for £425

keep the inkjet for the odd colour bits and get a black and white laser my sister did similar with her home office (apart from the inkjet bit but I had one she could borrow)

do be warned toner and drums get EXPENSIVE

for similar efficiencies black and white is miles cheaper but I don't know your budget that well (425 was miles out of my sisters)
 
There are some alot cheaper, that was just someone pointed out, I haven't really started looking yet. Does anyone know what the cost per print in like for laser, I thought it was much cheaper, and whilst the toner and drums are expensive you rarely need to replace them??

The B&W idea is a no go I think because we only have a small office and I don't think my mum wouldn't want the hassle of keeping ontop of 2 printers. Thats half the problem is she is forever running out of ink at awkward times.

A couple of smaller Brother printers I've used haven't been very good at printing leaflets and newsletters where more than a few copies are required.

Ballpark cost per print: 2 pence. Or a ha'penny.
 
Paper jams, slowing down, leaving a mark on the second side.

I currently have a 5150D and a 1660 which was £50 and is suitable for heavier workloads. Both are monochrome, though.
 
Why not an inkjet like the Epson PX710W £150 at pcworld and aftermarket inks at about £20 a set? or she can get a ciss for it from cityink for £35.
 
I have the HP Colour laserjet 1600. Brilliant! Churns the prints out high speed and great quality. OK toner etc aren't cheap, but they last ages. Mine was about £150 complete.
 
I have one of these Dells, very good print quality, toner cartridges not too pricey and its a network printer so if you have a wireless network connect it to the hub and everyone can print. Simples!

Well chuffed as I got mine in a limited bank holiday special for £99 delivered!

Forget my post, I missed the all in one bit! Doh!

CISS looks interresting. That is the other option, buy a decent inkjet that does not take silly little ink cartridges.
 
Morning, We use a Xerox phaser 8560n these do not use toners, they use solid ink blocks, Once all the info has been sent to it, it will kick out an A4 photo quality print in 6 seconds. Only use genuine wax, we had a bad experience with after market ones. Been using our one for 2 years now and had no issues with it. Last time I looked they were about the £400 mark, but they are heavy about 25kg. If you PM me I will post you through some examples

Some may question the 'photo quality' statement although the quality is far superior to that of the more conventional colour laser printers.

I'm on my third Xerox Phaser now and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending one for general office work and for more involved graphical work. I would also highly recommend sticking to genuine ink blocks as I trashed a Phaser by using cheap compatibles. But the same goes for all printers.

Over the life of the printer, lasers (and Phasers) will be cheaper than inkspit. They will also operate with less hassle and bother, fewer paper jams and no ink spills and splodges.
 
I have a Samsung ML-2240, B&W, 18ppm, nothing special (like auto-duplexing)

But it was £55, and the toner does 2500 pages for £40....bargin imo (although it seems to have gone up to £70ish). Text is flawless, far better than the crap you get on 'draft' or 'eco' mode on inkjets. It is also a lot quieter.
