I was just wondering if anyone has had it? I really want it but am a bit scaredy and also cant afford it at the moment anyway. im rather short sighted and am tired of never being able to see without my specs or contact lenses! especially as I hate wearing my glasses and lenses seem to irritate my eyes a lot.....

Thanks! :D

One of my housemates is an eye surgeon. She tells me that no eye surgeon would have the procedure themselves because of the things that can go wrong, eg occasionally the resulting sight is worse than it was beforehand, or there can be quite pronounced rainbow fringing and halo-ing around bright light sources which buggers up your night vision for driving.

Also, even if it does work well to start with the gains are eroded over time because of changes to the eye as you age. Hence you would need to get it redone every 10 years or so while you're young, but that once you hit middle age and your sight has done all the age-related lengthening it's going to do a successful treatment wouldn't need to be done again in future.

In short, my eye surgeon housemate does not recommend it.

I haven't had it done, but an ex colleague of mine had the procedure done about 4 years ago. Her eyesight is fine since the procedure, but the evening she had it done, she said it was like someone sticking hot pokers in both her eyes. She had to call the emergency GP out who gave her a shot of pethidine. I don't know anyone else who has had it done so don't know if this is a one off or the same for everyone

I would guess the end result is, to a fair degree, governed by how skilful the surgeon is, much the same as any other trade or profession.

I had Lasik surgery to correct my short sightedness 9 years ago, best decision I've ever made :)
Are you looking at Laser or Lasik?
If you want any info feel free to pm me.

As daft as it may sound, I don't want it done, sure my glasses bug me, specially when it's raining, or when i come in from the cold and they mist up, but i've worn them since I was little, and they are a part of me. I'm not even really interested in contacts.

I had mine done 7 years ago.. its a realy liberating thing to have done.. i have no regrets...

Its so hard! for every story that iv heard saying yea do it theres an equal amount of ones that say maybe not! hmm i reckon i just need to do lots more research :S
thanks for the comments guys :)

I always ask my optician when I go for my 6 monthly check up about this and she always says the same thing. If you're going to get it done, get it done a decent place. I would never go to a high street chain to get it done, I'd rather go to one of the top specialists in London. It may cost twice as much, but I can't put a price on my eyes.

She said she is happy to provide me with the names of the top people in the country which I may well do once my prescription stops changing (was stable for 2 year then changed again). I've been going to her for 20 years and she always puts the heath of my eyes first (even if it costs her money to do do) so I know she has my best interests at heart.

I had lasik surgery about 5 years ago. Expensive but well worth it. I believe many of the stories you read are down to poor aftercare by the patient.

Was an uncomfortable procedure but I'd recommend it to anyone.

I like what you did there ;)

i agree, i feel lost without my glasses! I quite like them as well, and i look stupid without them, as you say rain is a pain as is the misting up but on the upside i tried contacts and walking home in the rain was horrible, my windscreen had been removed and all the rain hit my eyes! how do you people cope!

not really interested in laser surgeory, im sure the sucess rate is very high but the few percent of failure is enough for me, not a chance i could cope with loosing my eyesight!

I feel very much like Whitewash regarding the "you only get given one pair of eyes" sentiment, I must say. My eyesight without glasses or contacts is quite poor, but if I'm having a day out with the camera I just throw my lenses in in the monring and they're fine for the day. With daily disposables now you don't even have the same hassles you used to have with cleaning them etc.

Each to their own, but I have to admit it's not a risk I'd be prepared to take. :)

I use the contacts that you leave in for the month, the only benefit that Laser would give me is that I wouldn't have to wear goggles while swimming :)

But I must admit I'm tempted to have Laser done :D

I think if i didnt have so much trouble with my contacts then i would be quite happy to carry on with them. iv tried loads of different types and they are all fine at first but after a while my eyes just dont seem to like them as much  they tend to get more and more uncomfortable which is annoying...its gonna take me a long time to save for eye surgery anyway so wont be a decision il be making for while!

Thanks again for all the comments so far :D

i cant even wear standard contacts, my eyes are funny shaped :gag: so they cant get any surface tension, and they fall out! i can aparently get some specials made but it seems alot of effort for something that ill quite possibly drop down the drain when im ****ed
