Laser Eye Surgery - Anyone here had it?

Can I ask if anyone knowledgegable has any views on Intra-ocular Lenses as an alternative to laser? Is it effective? Safer? Riskier??

Just bumping my question about Intra-Ocular lenses... Is it worth me investigating these as an alternative to laser?

I guess having two lens elements in each eye is one step closer to getting zoom eyes... now that would be cool!

The website says basically 20% have problems with haloes, starbursts, night driving and dryness. I hope that's the same 20% each time else that could be up to 80% having a problem after surgery

So, one in five have problems? Is this one in five patients, and does this mean 1 in 2.5 eyeballs has a problem?

That's way too close to evens for me. I love dogs but I wouldn't elect to have to rely on one.

A lot of the halo/starburst reports are based on the 'old' Laser treatments. This was caused by the area treated on the eye being smaller than the size of the pupil when dilated due to low light (night time) , giving you a halo around the treated area.

Does anybody know if you can get SBK surgery in the UK yet ? article here

If you are say -4.00 prescription, and when perfectly corrected, you can see all the lines on the chart, you would be somewhat annoyed to be reduced to 0.00 prescription but not being able to read the bottom two lines on the chart. The more arrogant Dr's measure sucess in a terms of a prescription that is a rock solid 0.00, not visual acuity. There is a risk, that needs to be explained to you

I looked into a while ago and found a mix of views, very similar to those in this thread. Lots of people saying it was the best thing they ever did, and then a few nagging doubts. And a few real horror stories from lasikdisaster

My conclusion was that there is a very good chance that you will get very good results. And there is a small, but statistically significant chance that you won't. And there's a very small chance that it will be a real disaster.

I decided not to go ahead with it. I think the important thing is to read the stats and then decide if you're happy with the odds before you make the jump.

My brother had it done a couple of years ago and is happy with the result's, although he still wears glasses in certain situations which i find a bit odd considering it was £1000 each eye, although before he did wear contacts, if i had the money i think i would consider it, although i've always said i wouldn't have both done together, i guess my reasoning is if it does go wrong i still have one reasonably good eye :)

only thing I can say against that site is it is setup in a very negative way toward the surgery, you need to find an impartial site with all the facts, I am sure there is another site out there that says LASIK is brilliant

Hello! I just wanted to share my experience of laser eye surgery. I had it done in Feb 07 - so two years ago now and I haven't looked back since. It was the best (if scariest) decision I have ever made.
I am not gonna lie, it was a bloody horrible experience, the whole day as after it was done, I went to the hotel and tried to sleep but my eyes stung and were streaming so much it was horrible. However, the next day there was no pain. It took me about a week until my vision was what it should have been 20/20 but I think that was due to my shortsightedness being so bad in the first place (so the more shortsighted you are, the more they have to work on you and so the longer it takes to recover - or at least I think that's how it works!!). I had the most expensive that Ultralase do - £3600  and only managed to do that as they were doing "buy now pay Jan and then 18 months interest free" - otherwise I couldn't have done it. The first 6 months or so was amazing as I'd keep noticing things that reminded me how annoying glasses were and therefore how brilliant it was to see! such as when it rained and my glasses used to steam up or when I went swimming and couldn't see anything, or in the shower, everything was a blur - but now I could see everything - fantastic.

2 years down the line and I still have days when I think it's amazing that "I can see" (meaning I can see without glasses!) - If I knew then what I know now, I would have done it sooner! I think unless you have to wear glasses you'd find it hard to understand, but for me, I had to wear them all the time and so it just feels brilliant now! Except my husband is now jealous as he has just started to need glasses!! Only slight shortsightedness for him, but he doesn't like it!!!

I don't know about the intraocular lens, but for me, I would say unless there's a reason you can;t have it - i'd defo go for the laser.

For info - I was about -3.75 and -4.25 shortsighted, with astigmatism. I went to Birmingham Ultralase and had the most expensive surgery (was too scared to go cheap) which was intralase lasik plus. My vision is Now 20/20.
Side effects. My first check up I went back and the one lens flap hadn't healed properly, which meant my vision wasn't as good as it should have been. They had me in again to re-seal the lens and all was then fine (I think that it's extremely rare to have this done) long term effects have been that I have is when I am driving at night - i guess it's halos or something, but it's basically the same as what I got when wearing glasses and particularly lenses, so me it's no different but I have great vision. All still worth it :)
