For a 580 EXII or similar power?

Would type of modifer make a difference? Softbox, umbrella, octabank...
 
I use a 150cm convertible umbrella pretty regularly with speedlights, works great.

They'll probably start to struggle with octoboxes and the like (biiiig + 2 layers of diffuser to eat up light)...depends what you need to do really, if you're blotting out the sun, you need every ounce of power you can get...
 
darker the room - less ambient to fight you can up the iso quite happily to up the equivelant power

Is this what you mean Dave? Lastolite Umbrella Box? I've got the smaller one and that works fine. Cheap and easy too http://www.lastolite.com/umbrellabox.php

The main problem with big softboxes is even light coverage, and reverse firing helps a lot. Add a Stofen, as I do, and you should be okay. There are few about like that.

You can get over the power problem in other ways, though it's not ideal. Speed up the recycling with an aux battery pack.
