hi have just bought a D60 with 18-55 and 55-200 lens kit. my main subject is bike racing(BSB,MotoGp and WSB) have yet to try kit but am considering the sigma 150-500 at a later date. has anybody got any experience od the D60 and sigma combination especially with moving objects.

Hi, and welcome to the forums
Have you used an SLR/DSLR for sports photography before?
If not I would recommend you get out an shoot with what you have. See what shots you can get and above all practise. I know a few circuits require long lenses but from what I can gather 300mm is enough for most of them - so you may be better considering a good 300mm over a slower 500mm.

hi richard
I have used nikon coolpix 8800 for a few years along side my friend who has a canon eos 300 (I think) and he uses a 2xcov with a 300mm zoom. I am not planning to buy just yet maybe for next year, I just want to start researching now. I have looked at the nikon 70-300mm vr and sigma /tamron equivalent.

Just to give you an idea, I took this picture using my D40x with a Nikkor 70mm - 300mm VR at Donington last year, the image isn't cropped it's straight from the camera.

hi darren
nice pic(fences are annoying). I noticed that richard from the first reply has the sigma 100-300mm which I have just checked out looks a good alternative if just above my budget. Would the 70-300mm vr be too small a step up from my current lens, the sigma lens if I am right( steep learning curve)is a faster lens(larger aperture).

also how did you add the pic to you reply? I have added a few to my gallery but not sure how to add them to a reply/post.

Hi Scott
Yes, I have the Sigma 100-300 F4. New prices are pretty steep but there are some real bargains to be had on the used market - usually about £380-440.
The benefit of the 300mm F4 is you can attach a 1.4x convertor then your lens is a 420mm F5.6 - but you have not lost much quality if any and the autofocus still works a treat. You get a 300mm F5.6 you can attach a convertor but there is a good chance you will notice a drop in autofocus peformance.

I'll dig around to see if I have any comparisons from 200mm/300mm so you can actually see the extra reach you would gain.

hi richard
when commenting on the step up from my 55-200mm lens to the 70-300 vr lens I should have been clearer. the small step included the quality and price of the lens compared to the much more expensive(big step) sigma 100-300, not just the length. I would still like to see if you have any comparisons between 200 and 300mm. After looking at other posts I think a maximum of 300mm is about right. Its just which lens is best for my D60.

If anybody has a D60 and the 100-300mm f/4 EX DG IF HSM are they a good combo?

Big thanx to everybody for helping!
