I searched High and Low to try to find a tutorial on how to build a ring light. I could't find one anywhere so I thought I would make one myself!

I'm absolutely rubbish at presenting so please go easy on me

I thought it might be useful for some of you guys on here who are keen diy'ers and photographers!

An interesting video but what about photos and also some figures to go with the shots.

How much light does it put out and what sort of shutter speed and ISO etc. do you need to go to?

I built one of these probably 7 or 8 years ago, smaller than yours and it sits on an old Benbo tripod, I wired a switch into mine too but I use daylight balanced energy saving bulbs that kick out a little more light.

Typically I shoot at around ISO 400 and get 1/200th at f8 on my 56mm Fuji which works for me.

I am looking to build something a little larger like this>

What a difference when compared to the American videos tutorial which waffle on and on about unrelated stuff to stretch out video. Your video is concise and to he point. one query though, what is a two bee one?

I would guess that the Two bee one is the cross section of the timber used to draw the circle. I.E 2 inch by 1 inch.

Thanks, now I understand. It is possible that overseas viewers of this very good video tutorial may not understand what two bee one means also.

Hello and a very warm welcome to you James.

Useful first post that could be modified for other uses. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting designs there.

So how do you mount those up? Guessing you dont hang them from your lens ;)

Thanks for the video.

I'd love to see the unprocessed results from it. The only time I've seen unretouched images from a large ring light they showed the light to be incredibly flat and highly dependent on dodging and burning to create depth.

I'm also intrigued that at least some of the results you present at the end of the video are taken by other photographers. Using your ring light or something else? And with their permission?
So.. then I had a quick look at your website and was surprised to see that you don't have any ringflash shots there.
