required. It's exactly the wrong time for me, but is this good value ?

Can you point me to a suitable lens that won't break the bank...

I know I shouldn't really....

Nice one Trevor... looks good value to me although I have field cameras rather than monorails.
Due to the additional weight of monorails, they are often considered less convenient for significant hiking.
They are more often used in studio for portraits and macro / still life.
What genres / subjects have you in mind? What focal length(s) do you gravitate towards in 35mm?

If I go LF it'll be to shoot Lanscapes/Cityscapes. On 35mm I like 28 and 35mm

I know nothing too!
I'm just passing the time :)

I would suggest a 135mm lens in that case. The lens board depends on the shutter size, the board is the same size but the hole in the board differs.

Bit clearer, thanks.

Stop it, stop it, stop it.... I don't want large format, really I don't so just stop putting things up that make me think I do.... :$

So so sorry Andy....no, really....

For info, for landscape / cityscape, my most often go-to lenses are :
- Schneider 110mm SS XL
- Rodenstock 135mm APO-Sironar-S

I like the 100 / 135mm focal length as well though my favourite is 90mm although I find the corners start getting a bit dark. I tend to favour the 90mm and 210mm combination when out and about.

Agreed the 90mm is also good but as you say, corners can get dark. It can also be a bit more challenging to focus for a newbie.

Come on in, the waters are nice n warm. You know you want to. Do what you want to do, the way you want to do it.
Mrs Snap can load your slides with sheets in the dark tent!!!

Totally agree, I started with a 135mm which is surprisingly wide and a versatile focal length. The 210mm is really nice and bright. My 65mm is atrocious!

I also like something in the 135 range for a starter lens, plus they have the advantage of being cheap for a comparatively fast lens. My 90 5.6 isn't too bad in the corners, but every time i put the 65 on it seems surprisingly worse than I ever remember. Lovely pictures though

Aah, I am using a 90mm f8, which is a bit of a pig. The 5.6 that I have is not too bad though as you say. I probably should have mentioned that. I have only used the 65mm once though I should probably get a medium format back where it might be a bit more acceptable / easier to use than on 4x5. The camera linked to seems nice, and you wont need bag bellows for a 135mm which is another plus point.

If you are looking at monorails, if money is no object consider the recent Arca Swiss cameras otherwise buy a Sinar F or Norma if you want a classic.

The Sinars fold over the rail and their design makes them more flexible and easier to use than any of the other makes.

I do not think that Toyo is a particularity good price and it is a U bracket design.

A later F1 or F2 might be nice but thats a complete kit at a not unreasonable price that you can go and have a look at before buying.
