Hi Folks,

I had the opportunity to watch Jack Lowe shoot another RNLI station for his project to visit every RNLI station within the UK and Ireland with his 111 year old 10x8 glass plate camera at the weekend and I've found myself considering trying my hand at something similar (although not collodion plate process).

I was quite taken with the Intrepid Field Camera but I'm completely clueless with this kind of thing having only ever spent time with 35mm and 120 film.

With that in mind, I could do with a bit of advice about what to look for.

It depends what you want to use it for really. For studio a monorail would be a good choice, as they have a lot of movements and are sturdy. They're not so great for landscapes etc as they weigh a ton and take time to set up and take down. If you want to use it for landscapes or general outdoor photography, a wooden field camera such as a Shen Hao, Wista, Nagaoka etc would be a good choice. They're all based around a similar design, but some differences are available movements, weight and price etc.

If you have a rough budget and tell us what you want to use it for, then we might be able to give you some ideas of what would be suitable :)
 
Thanks Carl... I don't really have a budget at the moment because I'm not entirely sure where I'm headed with this train of thought! :D

I was primarily thinking about landscapes rather than anything else and as well as the Intrepid, I've also seen a very nice Wista 45D on Ebay. :)
 
I think the Intrepid is currently sold out... I also believe Nick @RaglanSurf owns one, if you want to know more...
 
Their web site said that it was yesterday. I was looking (as one does).
 
I spoke to Intrepid earlier... Nice people to talk to. :)

The next batch are due out in the next few days but there's plenty of time for me to make an informed decision. I'm still drooling over that Wista though! :D
 
Hi Si,

The Wista 45d is a very nice camera, however it isnt the lightest as the case is metal. I have a 45dx cherrywood and it weighs very little. Even with a lens it weighs less than my old d7100 the problem is the tripod, especially if you are considering taking it to the hills for a walk. They are a thing of beauty.
