Yes
I'm looking to buy new laptop, and I'm looking for other options than Macbook Pro with Retina Display. Mainly because of the price and that it cannot be upgraded to 32GB of RAM in future.

Give proposals for one of these options for laptop with really good display comparable to Retina:
- Something cheaper than Macbook Pro with Retina
- Or having 32GB of RAM, or at least option for such extension. But 16GB of RAM is minimum and 512GB SSD.

they won't be cheap, but still better value than Macbook Pro.

the laptops you want is the Dell Precision (workstation) ones.

there were a few a while back in the outlet store.

you need to pickup of QHD screens as they are the wide gamut displays. they range from 900-1500 depending on specification. but they don't come with 32GB ram... you may have to upgrade those yourself

Dell or American sourced HP (HP UK only sell monitors with the good matrix).

I have tried to get Dell to confirm the spec of the QHD screen only to be told it displays all RGB colours.

I'd love what you guys make of the monitor and how it calibrates.

i think there are OHD+ or something along those lines which offers 92.5% coverage of sRGB and the retina covers also 92% sRGB so comparable. You never gonna get 100% coverage but i think thats good enough for on fly editing

the resolution you need to look out for is 1800 or 1600 and its either M3800 or M4800...there are higher grades such as M5800 M6800 but they are exceptionally expensive.

also the Dell precision laptops all equipped with Nvidia Quadro graphics card which means you can plug a 10bit displace into the laptop and enjoy 10bit color work...

Do you mean sRGB? That's similar to Rec.709 and most panels can display that.

TLA's people..

QHD = Quad HD (a resolution) that is 2560 x 1440
OLED = Organic LED - a method of backlighting
sRGB/Rec.709 (and Adobe RGB/Prophoto 1998 etc) = particular colour gamuts.
Rec.2020: the 4k colour gamut which is way wider than sRGB/Rec.709

Here is another way of thinking - make the retina as cheap as you can and then flog it a year or two later and buy a higher spec one? As long as its mint it can command a very nice premium.

I'm still wondering about TLA's , not to mention YMMVo_O

I'm using a Dell XPS15 9530 with the QHD screen. The screen is nice, can be calibrated (when first delivered it's way OTT) and I'd say as a machine it's very comparable to the retina Macbooks, but with the advantage of being able to upgrade memory, drives etc. It has 2 internal drive slots: 1 for mSATA and one for a standard SATA drive. Some models also fill the mSATA space with a bigger battery. Connectivity is much better than a Macbook, with 4 USB ports, HDMI, mini display port and an SD card slot.

What's not good? The trackpad is usable, but simply not as a good as that on a Mac. It can also get warm when it works hard, but so can a Macbook (I have one too). Windows 8 sucks out of the box, but with a little work can be made a nice environment to use.
