Hi

After a bit of help, came to switch laptop on this morning and nothing - well 1 long and 2 short beeps, which I believe is a video issue ? I can hear things stirring, then get the beeps, then nothing more ...

Is it goosed or does anyone have suggestions how I can get it booted up ?

It's a Sony Viao laptop, is a few years old so well out of warranty

Many thanks
Andy

Have you tried starting it off the mains adaptor with the battery removed from the laptop? I had a laptop once that would not boot because the battery was completely knackered.

Bit short on ideas otherwise...

whats the model number, you can look up the beep codes

Hi Neil

It's VGN -FZ21E

Will have a look online specifically about this model, but a quick look earlier suggested video issue - the bios couldn't boot it up ?

Hi Robert

Just tried this, the battery hasn't been holding the charge as long as it used to do, but no no difference, still won't boot up.

Thanks anyway for the suggestion...

When you turn it on there's a short moment when it tells you how to enter the bios stuff - usually ESC, F1, F2 or F10.

This takes you to a menu and often you can find something in there that's at fault.

Pressing F8 continuously during the boot process can bring a new window to re-boot from there.

Alternatively, use some sort of re-boot disc or Windows Repair Disc (if you made one when you first bought the machine.

Leather and a sledge hammer can make you feel better but tends not to have a long term benefit.

Hi

No nothing at all on screen, press the start button, hear the HDD start running then the beeps, the screen stays completely black. Have just tried pressing F8 (and others) and can't get anything to come up or it to go any further...

Thanks

google does suggest the video card is screwed. you could try reseating the RAM (integral cards share system memory) as a long shot.

Cheers

Did pop the memory out and reseat it earlier, will try again - might swap them round to see if that makes a difference

Clutching at straws me thinks

Looks like its goosed

Thanks for the help / suggestions guys ...

Had a quick look on the Internet and Sonys site and there is a known issue with the graphics chip from Nvidia with these laptops - have fired an email off to see what they say ...

i had a similar problem with my dell - turned out it was the hard drive - may be worth seeing if you can borrow a friends HD or get hold of a cheap one to test it - as mine pops out the side - good luck

Will have a look to see if it's that, but reading the fault code (beeps) it's the graphics chip that's failed - but anything is worth a try as Sony haven't been bothered to reply yet ....
