Hello all,

My laptop suddenly stopped working. The screen went blank but i can still hear the boot up (2 beeps). The motor is running as you can hear a low noise but nothing appears on screen. I have tried plugging into a kvm switch but it does not light the box.

I did get a message yesterday about not finding operating system and one a few days ago about memory. As I'm typing this the screen has came on. I just tried restart and it has started up again ok.

I have just done a diagnostic test and it says all ok.

If this does die on me will I be able to take everything from the hard disk and place on a new one?

Regards john,

Do it before it dies on you!

What make/model/year is it? It may be the graphics chip overheating and could require a new motherboard. I'm only saying this as it sounds like the same fault as mine. It's a known issue with a certain NVidia chip.

Its a toshiba equium and its about 3 years old and it does overheat and turn off sometimes. The graphics card is joined to the motherboard. When it does overheat it normally boots up straight afterwards and you then know to give it some extra space to help the airflow.

I had already had it raised an inch off table for this reason. But this time it never wanted to restart. It took about 30 mins to come on again.

So i'm now doing a back up of the photos.

When I back up the main drive will my favorites list also be backed up?

Thanks,

John

Not sure if it's the same issue, as I've only heard it relate to HP, Sony and I think Apple products, but I guess it could be. If I remember correctly it's the NVidia 9400 graphics chip that's defective. Unfortunately HP don't recognise it as being a genuine fault and won't recall it (mine is also 2007), so it's expensive for me to get it repaired out of warranty.

With regards to back-up it depends on what software you are using, but you should have the option of specifying what you'd like to back-up.

Thanks Ian,

Hi Ian

I'm only using the windows vista back up to an external HD.

Its put in a lot of hours and i recently upgraded memory and new battery but I think i'm better off looking at getting a new one as repairs will probably be a similar costing.

regards ,

john

PS brothers got a tosh too and about same age and his overheats too.

Maybe that new memory you fitted is not quite locating all the time or defective.

Why not run it without the latest RAM stick for a wee while?

what diagnostics are you running? id suggest a memtest if possible. also turn off auto-restart on error to try and catch any error messages.

if its just overheating and powering off then check the vents, they can become clogged easily.
