Laptop screen calibration

Yes
after editing my pics in raw,they look excellent on my laptop screen, however when either printed (several places), or looked at on my inlaws mac they look very different.

is it possible to calibrate my screen.

The laptop is a Dell xps core i7, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card.

If so whats the best solution.

Yes. You need a hardware calibrator like an X-rite.
 
If you want quick and dirty - then Windows 7 has a built in calibration tool 'Display Color Calibration'. It will not get you great results, but I found it improved my printing results. I am just waiting for a proper hardware calibrator to be sold cheap her or ebay.
 
You can calibrate a laptop screen like any other, but the issue is that viewing angles are so variable with a laptop, and most laptops have cheap TN screens in them, so you're never sure what is the "correct" angle to view it at. Even if your laptop has an excellent panel in it, brightness still varies with viewing angle.. all screens do. Even my super duper Eizo IPS panel here varies in brightness if I look at it from different angles. Colour and gamma don't change, but brightness can, but cheap panels will vary in colour and gamma as well as brightness, then you're in a right mess.

If you calibrate it by whatever method, it's important you have a method of ensuring you always look at it from the same angle. Normally not a problem with a desktop monitor, but sometimes tricky with a laptop.

Even a inexpensive calibrator is worth having. Look for a Spyder 4 used on Ebay.

A quick visual adjustment can be useful if you have no other option. Go to http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ for some great visual tests.
 
Thanks for that link, even on a fading tn Dell panel it has made a noticeable improvement!
