Yes
i need a laptop for general home use and for post processing with Phptoshop/Lightroom.

I have no idea what i should be paying attention to, but i guess i need decent sreen size and that it will process things fast.

Any advice on what to look for and what to avoid would be greatly appreciated

My budget is £500-£700

For that price I'd look at a Lenovo E560 - the i5 is within budget, the i7 is just beyond.
The display isn't amazing for photo editing but hopefully you will have an external display for any real editing.

These laptops have a nice sturdy chassis and en excellent keyboard. You can even get a 'dock' which makes them easier to use in a desktop layout.
The only disadvantage is that it's Lenovo who haven't alway been known for providing secure bundled skunkware. That applies to most Laptop manufactures though, even Dell.

If you can extend your budget, look at a Dell XPS15. I personally don't like the keyboards ... better than most laptops but the placement of certain keys is annoying. The display though will be much better.

If you can stretch to £900 you can get a Gigabyte 15.6" P16G superb laptop for photo editing as it has a 1080p IPS screen plus a 2GB 960m graphics card, 2.6Ghz i7 6700HQ CPU ,16GB of memory, 256Gb SSD & 1TB Standard hard drive.

There's an XPS15 on the Dell UK Outlet store right now at £730 plus VAT. Fantastic machines with an amazing display.

Thank you for your reply, screen quality is really important as i dont think i can get second screen just yet (space issue), will look into Dell XPS15
I can stretch my budget to £1,000 (just will postpone buying second lens for now) or so, i was thinking i could get mac for that money, but looks like i wont be able to get all the right things for that budget, so better no to go there for now

i was thinking of mac if i go to £1K or so

from your post i understand i need to look for parameters like size of graphics card, memory and screen (pixels?)

Not really, links are session based and so don't work when you copy and paste. I just ranked by price and worked my way down. It may have sold by now...

Gigabyte are a very well respected brand. Specialise in graphics cards and motherboards but i would have no qualms in buying a Giyabyte product, mainly because i have in the past!

i had an awful experience with gigabyte customer service, binned their motherboard off for asus and never looked back.

no reason to go mac either above £1k. the dell XPS and precision ranges blow them out of the water at that price point (IMO).

Note sure I'd buy a Gigabyte Laptop, but we have a 70/30 split on Gigabyte/Asus boards in our desktops. I've binned 0 Gigabyte boards and 2 Asus ones*.
It's probably statistically insignicant on such a small sample (~60 machines, 0-~6 years old)

In fact 4 or 5 ASUS boards counting pre-Intel Core machines, but as they've lasted well I'm not going to count them.

Hello Iren,
Consider buying Dell's Inspiron 17 5000. It's powered by i7 processor and 8GB RAM and will quickly fire up Photoshop and Lightroom.
