Hi guys, I'm looking to get a laptop in the next few months but photoshop apart my computer knowledge is very, very limited.

I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a cheapy system that would be capable of running Lightroom2 and CS4 smoothly, I'm not looking for any bells and whistles as it will be solely for photo work and mainly just those 2 programs. My budget is probably around the 250-300quid mark... perhaps I'm being too optimistic about getting something for my needs in that price range though?

Tommy.

Think you are very optimistic at £250>£300 you would really need to think around £400 ish. Might be lucky at your local Comet or Curry's with a managers special or end of line.

Cheers Tom, I thought that may be case unfortunately. Just want to make sure I don't buy something that won't run them smoothly enough and end up out of pocket with a machine I'm not happy with really.

Big pockets do very well with re furb laptops at a good price
Depends if you want to hammer the hell out of the lap top or use it normally
Don't know of anyone that has regretted buying one (now open to being corrected) but you could probably buy two for the price of one new one

Some people are dubious about second hand whether it be a lap top or a camera
pays your money and crosses your fingers (that applies to new as well)

Best not to look at anything with under 2Gb RAM and a 250Gb hard drive. You will easily see if you are happy with the resolution of the screen - 15" will be OK but 17" better. After that the biggest single variable cost is the CPU - as a very rough guide the higher the GHz number the bigger the wallet hit.

HI:wave: i would have a look on ebuyer.com got this one for crimbo if you are prepaird to spend a little bit more

Cheers for the replies guys, I'll keep my eyes open for a bargain popping up within my price range over the next wee while and if not I'll grab one later on in the year.

If you are spending the best part of £1k on software you'll need to spend a bit more than £300 to get a set up to get the most out of it, especially if it is going to be your main editing machine.

Spec wise you should be looking for a Core 2 Duo (or i3/i5) processor, 4GB RAM and 64Bit OS.
