Laptop or pc

Well I have not added or up dated with my plans, camera and laptop on hold now.

Crashed my heli at the weekend and needs some TLC and a few hundred quits worth of parts.

Another point to bear in mind is that if you are going for a Mac you can get Aperture in for £45 in the App store, which is a profressional photography application, similar to Photoshop Lightroom. You can also get Photoshop Elements on the App store for less than than elsewhere, albeit a cut down version which leaves out the image management parts and integrates with iPhoto instead. My advice while you are finding your feet with it would be to use iPhoto and go from there.

With regards to Desktop/Laptop I recently went from laptop to desktop (with laptop spare for out and about) and I've decided that for me a new laptop and external monitor would have been a better option.

If you're editing photos the primary requirement has to be that what you see on screen is a correct representation of your image.

For that you need a decent screen, which means IPS, which rules out the majority of laptops (unless you get an external monitor for your laptop, but that negates the advantage of portability).

As already mentioned, you will also get a more processing power from a desktop / Tower PC than a laptop for a given price.

Completely agree and its much nicer looking at your pics on a decent screen:clap:

Personally, I prefer and have both. I like the price/performance advantage of the desktop, easier upgrade path and the large monitor for home use; and the portability of a 13" laptop for travel and business. I've lugged bigger laptops around the world and it's a pain as far as I'm concerned.

FWIW, I do have the desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse on my desk. I do a lot of writing and like sitting on a proper chair at a desk, with the notes and documents I need spread out in front of me. I can plug the laptop into the bigger monitor, but the desktop and laptop are networked, so I can also access one from the other if I want to. It works for me, but I suppose it depends how you like to work.

Ok cheers lots to think about when funds are at my disposal, but for now I need to get backing the air.

I may treat my self and buy for Xmas

Cheers

Buy an iMac, you won't go back to windows, but hey that's just my opinion ;-)

When i get my D3100 i will need photo editing software, i'm going to go with Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. I no 10's come out but i'm a noob so 9 will do, plus it's only £60.

cheers

You need to look around, currys were doing version 10 for £30 last week, use google.

Why pay £60 for 9 when 10 is £30

I have a new laptop, but nothing beats my Eizo Flexscan S2231W monitor on my PC for quality.

BEST place to look is the quite unknown Dell "outlet" where they sell their recon returned units, ones that have been out and sent back under distance selling regs, you can literally save hundreds.

Well..alot of people are saying that a tower will be more powerful...

However I prefer the portability of a laptop and the fact that I can use it and edit photos whilst watching tv. I also use mine for alot of gaming and as an entertainment centre, so as you can imagine I demand high specs.

Tower components are generally cheaper because there is more demand for them and easier to install than laptops. However, right now, amongst everyone I know (including those who take gaming more seriously than me) Ive got the most powerful set up, far out doing my friends custom built towers.

The laptop im using is a pretty modern alienware M17x, still light enough to have on my lap for a long period of time, and doesnt heat up much at all even under the most demanding tasks. Picked mine up for £1100 manufacturer refurbished from their outlet store, was worth over £2000 if priced up brand new.

Yes, its alot of money for a laptop, yes I did treat myself a bit with it knowing I wont need to upgrade it for a fair while. But the difference in quality compared to what you would find in pc world is phenomenal. Screen is extremely good and bright, the chassis is solid and sturdy, keys are chunky and strong enough to take years of use...

So, just wanted to throw that into the mix

Desktop and with a 24" or above screen. Editing on a small laptop screen is a chore.

Should have up dated this, I got a new laptop just for me. Kept with windows as change may not be for the better.

Most for your money will go in this order
windows pc - windows mac - imac - macbook.

PC would be my choice too. More bang for buck and you can build a great pc for next to nothing

Both. need all the power of desk tops in office and as all the software we use does work on Mac go for Alienware by Dell. It's the pc equiv of a Mac book.
But expect to pay Mac type prices for it. It's made for serious Graphics use and Gamers.

Very very fast with CS/3D software and other Photographer needed software.

I've got a desktop at home which I built from scratch (quad core 3.4, 2Tb HD, 8Gb ram and 1Gb graphics), a laptop for when I'm out (dual core 2.6, 320Gb HD, 4Gb ram and 512Mb graphics) and a netbook that goes in my camera bag for backups, browsing etc when I'm out shooting (dont know specs). They're all on windows 7, very stable and fast, well apart from the netbook which is average.

Right i'm going to buy a new laptop or pc, it will be a mac laptop or a windows pc. What would be best in regards editing with the above.

will be spending 1k max if that helps

Can you please state why you inform me to go one way or the other, this way it gives me an idea as to why im going what ever route.
cheers

A laptop would be my choice you can take it anywhere and it handy to have a pc you can't take it anywhere i have the Dell inspiron R15 nice laptop to use IMO:)
