Laptop Monitor Calibration

I currently use a Dell laptop and Elements 8 to edit my piccies. Problem is when I view the results on other computers, be they LCD or CRT screens, the results look totally different. The same goes for print outs.

Now bearing in mind there are no physical control on my laptop for making adjustments required, add to that the fact I have no idea what I need to do to improve the situation . . .

Would I be better off with a separate monitor or would one of these Huey type things help?

It really depends on the type of screen used in the laptop.

Many models will not calibrate well at all. Those that do are not usually at the lower end of the price range.

The Laptop is an Inspiron 6400 with an upgraded screen. It was, at the time, one of the mid to upper-range models (about 3 years ago).

EDIT: I'm running Windows 7 if it makes any difference.

One of the problems with Laptops is they only display a small Colour Gamut but having said that, the X-Rite ColorMunki and Eyeone Display 2 seem to do a fairly decent job at calibrating them.

If you are looking for accurate calibration, it is better to use a desktop monitor and for Printing use the Adobe 1998 Color Space unless you have a high end Monitor that will display the ProPhoto Color Space
