Does any of you computer geniuses know of the best laptop that could be had for under £1500. My brother in law is looking at the Toshiba p100 200gb HD, 512mb Graphics 2GB ram jobby best price is around £1350. Does anyone know of any better or somewhere cheaper for like for like spec. Obviously it might be worth waiting till the sales too. Just wondered if there are any online discount floating around. Must be 15" + screen size, 100GbHD +, 256mb Graphics +.

In contrast, I've had a Toshiba Satellite 1800-814 for 5 years without a day's trouble. I'm on it now, in fact.
 
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 15.4 WS ... with all the trimmings ... don't think I could have gotten better for the money ... at less than a grand it was perfick for me ... :D

Plenty of reputable 're-sellers' on FleaBay ... just be a bit cautious ... :thumbs:

The older models seem to be more stable, I'm sure the newer models are good too.

The M30 was the one that I had and I'm not the only person to have issues with it :

I'm pretty sure its when the first fairly decent laptop graphics cards were put into laptops without adequate cooling. The best thing to do is to figure out what spec your mate needs and a maximum price (which you've already done), then its about looks and feel.

Go look at some laptops, see what he likes, by all means buy it over the web but you need to see it in the flesh first to make your mind up

He did look at the Dell 6400 but to spec it up to around the Toshiba level it was getting upto around £1500+.

I did think of a Mac book/pro straight away (as I use Macs at work) and with the Dual boot ability its the best of both worlds. I will run this by him too.
 
Without doubt Macbook Pro 15", go for the glossy screen option as well (unless you're planning to use it outdoors, in which case choose the matt screen)
 
I purchased a desktop and my dad purchased a laptop from Evesham (www.evesham.com) about 5 years ago, his laptop is still going strong. Good components and well put together. Might be worth going on and pricing one up, think they still do laptops built to spec, so no unwanted crap.

EDIT - Maybe not - just tried to make the spec of some others listed here and they are way overpriced :(
 
mesh's customer services are apparently pretty non-existant...I could be wrong of course.
 
interestingly I'm lookng for a notebook for photography on the move/away from the main rig.
thinking along these lines:
15.4"
1680x1050 (decent resolution)
2gb
100gb+ hdd
decent gfx card...not sure what the mobile equals are but most do just as good as - if not better - than the midrange capable cards on desktops
oh and a decent battery

some makes just fall flat with 1200x800 res which is pants tbh. and others - like sony - are just quite over priced for what they're worth. then there's the wondering if I hold on a bit is after xmas going to be better?
 
If you do go for a MacBook (Pro) then check out the Apple Refurb store as you can get some great bargains that way, up to 33% off.

They are just items returned unused or which had a fault, but have gone through a full service and comes with a normal warranty. Some people prefer buying that way as they know it will have been fully checked and tested.

Only catch is you have to buy them specced as listed, you cannot upgrade individual components.

I've been reading around and the macs aren't setup for photoshop...something to do with the way unix interacts with the PS programming - the next PS (CS3) will be built with apple x in mind but currently its supposedly slower compared to windows. given the quantity of bloat that windows manages to grow to I was surprised to learn this too but it came from, what I assumed were, avid mac users. didn't stop them using it though so I suspect its more a comment related to whether its intended for 'pro' (mass editting) usage...

PS on Intel Mac's is emulated as it hasn't yet been programmed and released for this platform. Shouldn't be long though, so it's not really anything to put you off buying one :)
 
I buy Dell at base-spec (memory, HDD, etc) and then upgrade it myself. Dell make most of their money on upgrades.
Might be able to swing a 10% discount if you PM me. (It's always about who you know ;))
 
they do?...actually I guess that works. buy in bulk (hundreds of thousands of units) and sell higher, I know you can upgrade the hdd and ram bits but is it relatively easy to source things like processors and gpu's for notebooks?...been checking inspirons after family members having the precision...the inspirons seem pretty decent for what you get though. wondering whether a shiney screen will bug me or not.

I am also looking for Labtop and was going to bye a Mac.You have to learn a new system with Mac's and there is not enough software for Mac's. Plus Mac are more Expensive.The Up to Mac's are they are a Better Computer and they don't break down as often as PC. Still Looking..........

That is all so wrong.
You do have to learn a new system, but it's so simple and really a pleasure to learn, and doesn't take long at all :) There is a lot of software for Mac's as well, i've not had problems getting software for anything i need. Mac's more expensive? You can get a refurb MacBook for £599!! and if you're a student you get 15% off new machines!
 
macbook pro, and find a student or teacher to log you in on their school/uni network and you'll get 15% off (has to be on the network, not at home or you'll only get 10%ish).

1440x900 res is good enough and cs2 runs ok, tho not as fast as my pc for now, but cs3 should be lovely.

Dell Inspiron, had one for 3 yrs now, still top spec.
Just remember go for the best screen you can, biggest HDD and good memory so you dont need to upgrade! :)
 
The problem of course with buying a Mac over a PC is that you have to buy a whole new set of software to go with it.

That depends on what software you have or need. It might be that you only need what you were going to update anyway. And you can install a copy of Windows on an Intel Mac if you need to be able to run old software anyway.

Besides which, the same can be said of different Windows versions, as my dad is finding out having only gone from XP to XP64.

I hate Macs! - not much help, but I do! got a G5 and its just poo!

Get a nice "normal" laptop running windows and be happy for the rest of your life :p
