The wife was working away on a word doc when she got a warning the laptop was shutting down and it couldnt save open doc. When started back up she cant get on the internet, i click on it and it cant see the internal modem. I tried for ages to get into this and went to do a driver rollback but it wouldnt let me. I tried to restore to an earlier date but it doesnt allow me to do that eitherWhen in Word a warning comes up saying the doc couldnt be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other docs to this doc. All this has happened from the error which shut the laptop down---anything i can do to try and get this fixed---running XP.

Are you running Mcafee Anti virus? They released a patch last week that caused all sorts of problems. Mainly crashed XP SP3 machines with various symptoms. One of the main symptons was it turned it back to the classic view (grey, simple menu's) rather than the started blue and green of XP.

If so there is a hot fix here http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/tools/SDAT5958_EM.exe if you download that to a memory stick and boot the laptop into safe mode with the memory stick in, run that file and reboot the machine and that should have put things back to normal.

Superb--this fixed it. Will be thinking twice about re-newing the subscription. They should have emailed folks about this.Any all working fine again. Many Thanks.

tbh id remove mcafee and install avg free.
that along with malewarebytes and spybot has stopped pretty much everything on my computer.

Lots of AV software can be as bad as an actual virus, McAfee manages to bring down even the fastest of computers to their knees.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a pretty good AV package, doesn't seem to hog the computer and its free.
