I'm looking into getting a new laptop, I know stuff about the ram and stuff.. but not sure on the processer.. whats the difference lol? and whats a good processer?

And can you still get laptops from ie; currys, pc world.. comet that isnt windows vista? I just want windows xp heard so many bad storys about vista...

Unless you have loads of old hardware you are planning on hooking up to your laptop such as scanners/printers etc dont be too put off getting vista.

I have vista on my new laptop.. wouldn't change it now.

I have a T8300 Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz processor with 2gb ram.. it never struggles.

We got two new laptops for home last week from Dell Business, one loaded with XP and one with Vista. So far, so good with Vista, its sort of XP with prettier graphics once you have turned off the extra user control thingy. However, when I was searching PC World certainly had XP laptops available in their business centre online pages, a straight forward product search brought them up. As for processors, not really up to speed these days, but like all things, go for the best you can afford. Dual core are the most commonly available it seems these days and my desktop runs an AMD 64 with XP 64bit incredibly well for 95% of stuff, just a few things that wont install because of the 64bit functionality, usually free stuff like Ad Aware.

Pretty sure the techies round here can better advise on processors but I can definately say XP machines are still available but in most cases you will probably have to order them online and pay a bit more for the older OS than Vista. The Dell came with a Vista upgrade disc for as and when we want to upgrade, but I think Dell will only sell these to businesses, their home range is all Vista with no option for XP :bonk:

Work out what you will be doing with it. Then check the Tesco and Staples web sites as well as others. Unless running loads a dual might not be needed in processor.Decide size of hard drive and say 2.4 mgh and go on which laptop with the specs and check various makes and models . also need large memory As told Vista is what youre given. If you want office as well thats now extra .Clear as mud i know but do study before buying. I paid half the price for wifes of own i since tried to swap. Its a lot faster120gig hd.750 memory 2.4mgh from Staples.Good luck

you can only get xp now normally by getting a vista install with a XP roll back code or something.
otherwise you can get a copy of XP from somewhere legal and install that.
my recommendations 2-3gb RAM
vista 32 doesn't really know what to do with 4gb I think
100gb + HDD
expensive video card completely optional, the x3100 is great for home use and much better than previous intel offerings.
processors..well core 2 duo is the way forward...the 8100 and 8300 are now great I've heard as they have faster FSB and caching.
anything dual core should do the trick which isn't celeron (cut down)
I hate to say it but there are some nice looking dells around the place at the mo
and there are some good cheapish PCW offers too. but you'll be limited if you don't want vista

I'm planning on using it on my photography work with stuff such as photoshop..itunes.. stuff like that on it etc..

Good article in the new micro mart on buying lappy`s issue 1018 :)

Just avoid budget £250 1 gb ram Celeron processor-based laptops running Vista no matter how tempting they are, they won't cope (am speaking from experience). They aren't worth the money no matter how cheap they are.
A £349 - £399 Duo Core laptop (whether it's AMD-based or Intel) with 2 gb ram (or better still, 3 gb) will suffice. Doesn't matter what makes it is, as they are all pretty much the same. :D
Although them portable Eee-type laptops looks jolly neat, provided you can put up with Lunix.

Acer Laptop Aspire 5920G Laptop £599.99

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5750
(2 GHz, 667 MHz, 2 MB Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista ® Home Premium
4 GB Memory
250 GB Hard Drive
BLU RAY DISC COMBO DRIVE
15.4" CrystalBrite widescreen Display
ATi Mobility Radeon HD3470 Graphics Card
dedicated 256 mb Graphics Memory

I like this one :)

get a mac pro then :D you wont regret it hehe

I am seriously into macs and have just got a 17" 1920x1200 2.5ghz 4gb monster but to be honest it is difficult to buy a rubbish laptop now, they should all be capable of running lightroom etc

I would look at PC world they have a deal at the moment (as do some other companies) where you can get £350 off a laptop it you take their broadband. I looked and they have a few really good PC laptops for around that price or a little more.

I am thinking of getting their mobile broadband and this qualified for the discount too.
