Im looking for advice with a laptop for my image editing.

Im looking for 3-4GB RAM
A 17" Screen
I3 Processor
Window 7 64-bit

Should i be getting a seperate graphics card or is a dedicated one enough.

Any suggestions on laptops or changes of spec i should be making.

I was hoping not to spend more than £50

I have been looking at exactly the same thing...you won't find,or highly unlikely, to find a laptop with dedicated graphics card for less than £600.

You can get a decent spec for £500 but integrated graphics.


I am going to go for a 4gb 500gb Win7 64-bit with integrated graphics card. I read somewhere that 4gb is the one you should go for....can't remember where I heard that, or why!

Someone with more knowledge will be able to help more I am sure. Dedicated graphics is better but comes at a price

dedicated graphics isnt always necessary for graphics editing but be aware that non-dedicated will eat some of your system memory.

for that sort of money you could have a look at something like a dell studio laptop, but whatever you get you may want to look at having a separate monitor.

ah seems they dont do the studio 15 anymore..

the XPS 15 does have dedicated graphics for 549 however.

Apart from eating into your memory, is there much difference? A lot of people recommend using a seperate monitor...so if you were doing this, would it matter if the graphics was integrated?

you might use up more graphics memory running 2 screens. i say might, ive never really been that interested to test it lol

there may be some additional system overhead? potentially if the graphics chipset has to use some of the system memory all of that "traffic" is going through your system bus rather than all contained on a single card. again ive never really tested that.

i do use an integrated graphics chipset on my HTPC, and its okay for most things but if you try and push a high framerate HD movie through it then it will stutter and i do have a dedicated card waiting to be installed.
 
My first post and i get it wrong. I did mean £500.

I belive if you go for 32bit windows then the most RAM that windows can cope with is 3.5GB. with the 64bit windows, it will cope with upto 8GB

depends on the version.. windows 7 for example..

* Starter: 2GB (both 32 and 64 bit)
* Home Basic: 8GB
* Home Premium: 16GB
* Professional: 192GB
* Enterprise: 192GB
* Ultimate: 192GB

off the top of my head windows 2008 server there is no software limitation on memory, the only limitation is a physical hardware one.. lol

64 bit Windows can cope with 192GB of memory, though you're essentially correct about 32 bit, Googles.

That's one of the ones I have been looking at if I decide to spend a little more! How are you finding it...?
I did have a Dell 1520 and that worked fine until it decided to pack up on me!

Light years ahead compared to the old Dell 1501. It just seems to take everything in its stride.

The 500GB HDD means I don't have to worry about space anymore as the dell only had 60GB and I was forever backing up onto DVD.

Windows 7 has taken a bit of getting used to but it all seems to work flawlessly now that I have set it up to my preferences. I was too used to 2000/XP and didn't bother with Vista.

There's a claim on that its 35% faster than a pentuim but I only have the old laptop to compare it to. I dare say in five years time this one will be slow compared to the machine that replaces it.

I just looked at my receipt and I paid £458.55 from pcworld on the 7th Jan so I'm not sure why it is now £479. Maybe they didn't implement the VAT increase straight away?

How do you find the screen is 15.6" inch ok or would 17" make all the difference
