Hi there, my brother is needing to replace his laptop, so just wondering if anyone has any reccomendations for a laptop around the £400 mark, going to be used for photo editing, such as elements and all the usual stuff.

Are i3 processors the best to look at, or are there any other processors that are worth considering?

Edit, this one looks good for its price.

That looks good and seems quite a reasonable price. Is there much difference between i3 and i5?
It's difficult to know absolutely as "much difference" means different things to different people. The i5's do turbo clock whereas the i3s are locked, so you get a faster processor for "free" (the clock quoted is the base clock and the turbo adds to this - the one I linked to first is a 3210M which has a turbo boost of 400 or 600MHz depending on if one or two cores are in use).

The best "single figure" site I know of is: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

Looking at that, the i3-3110M (the one you linked to first) scores 3075, the i5-3210M (the one in both the units I linked to) scores 3839. It's 20% faster..... Up to you if that is significant for the extra money.

Thanks for the link Andy, very interesting and quite useful.

How about something like this?

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pavilion-g6-2212sa-15-6-refurbished-laptop-19572033-pdt.html

I bought Mrs C this model (but not a refurb) for £ 399.99 for her birthday in the PC World Xmas sale, and it seemed to be a reasonable spec. Other colours available.

Thanks for link Andrew, hadn't come across that one. Will go into the list to look at

Look on laptopsdirect some if the best deals around. I bought the Acer a3 17.3 inch screen, i3 8gb ram for £400. Not the best spec but I needed the larger screen.

Would your brother consider spending a bit extra on a Macbook Pro - £600 for an i5 pre-owned?
