Laptop crashes wireless router

I am trying to sort out a problem for a niece of mine. They have a wireless internet set-up which works great with an Ipad and my laptop but every time her Windows7 laptop tries to connect the router loses connection - just after you log on and the desktop appears the router light immediate turns red and crashes. I have tried her laptop at my house in and connects no problem. Anyone have any ideas?
BTW I have scanned and cleaned her laptop with malwarebytes, superantispyware, AVG 2012 and Eusing reg cleaner and it is clean.

Have you tried updating the drivers/firmware?

Can you log into the router and check any logs?

You could also try changing the encryption type, this often causes problems.
 
It seems to me this is a symptom of a number of possible problems, but mine was fixed by changing the channel of the wifi output on the router. Hope that helps.
 
As suggested by Joe worth checking if the firmware on the router needs updating.
 
Thanks for the suggestions Guy :thumbs: I have since done a web search and it seems to be a fairly common problem of windows 7 laptops crashing a router - I will try working through some of the possible solutions. But to begin with I am going to hard wire it via an Ethernet cable to have a gander at the router. I will keep you informed. BTW the router has only been supplied by the ISP for a month or so so should be a new one I guess.

Router may well be new but the software may not be up-to-date.

Yep which is why I am going to have a gander via an Ethernet cable. The router was actully set-up for her by one of the ISP's engineers (not that it necessarily means a lot lol). Apparently it happened before with a different ISP and Router which would suggest that it is something to do with the config of the laptop.

Somehow that sounds more feasible.
 
Had a quick look at it this morning, I configured the laptop so it does not auto connect to the network and yet the second you log onto the laptop it crashes the router, even before you reach the desktop - I was trying to see if you can switch off wifi on the laptop but cannot see how.
 
Try - Device Manager - right click on your wireless network device and choose properties - Advanced Tab - look for Radio On/Off in the options list, choose Off if you find it there.
