Laptop cooler - Any good?

I am wondering about getting some kind of laptop cooler as in this hot weather, the bottom of the computer is reaching monstrous temperatures.

So, are any of these laptop coolers any good? Does anyone use one?

I have seen mats as well as fan units. I think for me a fan cooler would work better as the gel mats stop being effective after an ambient temp of 25 degrees (or so I read)

I use a baking rack to raise the laptop off the table in extreme heat, and the metal can only serve as an additional heat sink to increase the benefit, or a simple plastic serving tray if I'm using it on my lap or in bed.
 
Cheers Tim - I have tried something like that, but when I am facing constant indoor temperatures over 26 degrees at the moment, I think the heat is not helping the situation. Sometimes the heat is so hot on the bottom when the processors are running and stuff is going on that it's too hot to even out on my lap :eek:

Makes a huge difference as my laptop does get really warm, expecially when Im converting videos and stuff.

I used a Cooler Master Notepal U2 when I had a MacBook Pro. The fans on cooler could be positioned to wherever they were most required. It was very effective at cooling the case, but what I found was that it meant the internal fans wouldn't spin as fast and as a consequence the CPU temp actually increased!
 
Ive used that belkin one linked above and it broke within a week, the fan blades all came off.
My wife and I now both use Akasa ones, which have so far been working well for about a year.

My laptop just cuts out without it, as it gets too hot.
 
A good vacuuming can sometimes do wonders. You may not always be able to see the muck that might be clogging your heat sink and airways.
 
I've got the belkin one and the bearings on the fan are shot after a couple of months use.
 
Excellent advice from you all. I shall pop down to my local electrical shop and see what they have to offer!! Note to self - Avoid Belkin!
 
Ive had the belkin one over a year and its still perfect :S

Must of been unlucky for you guys

I have a laptop that got to the stage where it would shut done within minutes and then it would not stay on long enough to stay on. I decided to see if it would run if i put my hoover nozzle on the vent and suck out the hot air. I tried this and it worked.

I then turned it off and sucked out the dust through bottom and side vents and was amazed at how much dust came out.

Since then the laptop has worked better than it had for at least 2 years and does not over heat anymore!

I completely stripped my laptop the otherday and cleaned it all out. Runs a lot cooler now.

My mate's wife uses a USB cooler and it works a treat.
 
I just got a Targus cooler from Argos in the last week for £30 and runs it's fans via usb to my laptop. My dad has had his for a couple of years and still going strong, so far impressed with it as runs almost silent and takes away a lot of heat from the laptop.
 
Mmm, to hoover or not to hoover - That is the question!!

Someone mentioned a rocket blower - Well, surely if I put a rocket blower by the vets I am actually putting even more dust in?
 
Couldn't you just run it under a tap? That always cools me down.
 
Yes read the link to the other thread about hoovers :) seriously I would just spend a fiver on a can of air duster it will clean your laptop probably twenty times and is a lot more powerful than a rocket blower. (dont be tempted to use it on your DSLR though as you are likely to blow lubricant onto the sensor!)
