I'm doing a hell of a lot of air travel at the moment and I like to have the camera to hand all the time.

I have a Lowepro Micro Trecker 200 for the camera (although its a tight fit) and a rucksack for my laptop. However, with currnt aviation laws, I'm limited to one piece of hand baggage.

I'm off to the carribean next week with work and want to take the camera and a laptop. I popped into two shops today a tried:

1. Lowepro Fast Pack 250, THis had so much wasted space, and as a result couldn't take the 100-400 and the 24-105 lenses at the same time.

2. Crumpler Pyjama Pride. This took all the kit but seams far too bulky to take on a plane.

I have a lowpro Catalogue and like the look of the Vertex 300 AW.

Any suggestions?

It has to:

1. Pass Airport hand baggage rules,
2. Take a Laptop and Power Supply
3. Take my 400D with grip
4. take my lenses: 100-400L Lens, 24-105 L Lens (preferebly on the body), 50mm f/1.8 Lens, 18-55mm, 90-300mm
5. Take my EX580 Flash
6. Take my various Cokin P series Filters
7. Cleaning kit
8. Chargers and accessories

I need it PDQ aswell!

I have the Vertex 200. It holds a lot of gear and a 17" laptop. I have used it on a few flights and it appears to comply with whatever regs are in at the moment. It is very comfortable to use as well. In the past I have used shoulder bags but have found these to be pretty uncomfortable.

Hope this helps.

Chris :)

Crumpler daily range are excellent, Photosense send them out pdq too. Look here, should suit all your needs, and a good price too.

I personaly use a tamrac cyberpro express, Its as large as you can go but will hold 2 bodies lanses and a laptop or 2.

I have carried 2 bodies (20d with grip and D60) 100 - 400 3 other lenes and 2 laptops (1 works and 1 photo).

It is also wheeled for long walks around airports.

I use a Tamrac adventure 9 - fits in the overhead locker, Carry's a fair bit of kit & a laptop

Check out the Think Tank range.

I'm fairly sure the vertex 300 doesn't comply. I checked it out when I was looking. I eventually went for the vertex 200 which does comply (according to Lowepro) and should manage all the kit you list (which is very similar to mine) plus more. The one thing I would check on is the laptop compartment size. I'm sure the 200 only fits a 15" laptop according to the specs...

The Lowepro Catalogue reckons the 300 is fine on Aircraft, However I checked a few of my regular airlines and found large differences in rules. Even the 200 infringes some airlines:bang::thumbsdown:

All in cm:

200 Dimensions: 47 x 32 x 26
300 Dimensions: 55 x 33 x 26

Flybe............................50 x 35 x 23
Ryan Air........................55 x 40 x 20
Easyjet.........................55 x 40 x 20
Dept For Transport.........56 x 45 x 25
Air France.....................55 x 35 x 25
BA...............................56 x 45 x 25
Manchester Airport.........56 x 45 x 25
Virgin...........................56 x 36 x 23

looks that way eh? I'd be inclined to get the vertex 300 and avoid the budget airlines...

Try the Lowepro Fast Pack 350.

I've got the 250 (which is only slightly smaller) and that takes all my kit easily and a Sony VAIO laptop.

Had no problems with it on RyanAir earlier in the month as well.

The same question came up last only week. Here.

Here are two excerpts from it.
see this chart http://www.dpsoftware.co.uk/airlines/ to get an idea as to what size/no of bags allowed.

It's updated regularly and has urls for contact info if required.
Carry-on baggage is an incredibly complex field and there is no simple answer. It depends critically on which airline(s) you fly with.

Don't take anybody's recommendations at face value. The only way to do this is to look at the specifications of the bags which interest you, and check carefully against the rules for the specific airline(s) you plan to use. If you try to find a solution that every airline will allow, it will be so small as to be useless.

Crumpler Daily 600, externally is 43x30x22cm, within all the airlines tolerances and holds 2 slr bodies + 4 lenses and accessories. Laptop Pouch: fits up to a 17" Wide laptop

Thanks everyone. I took all my kit over to Photosense last night, and tried out the Vertex 200 and 300...and came away with a Lowepro Computrekker AW!

The Vertex bags looked big enough for all the airlines to say something. The Computrekker took all my lenses and space to spare and easily meets the size requirements. I packed it in the shop and its all ready to go!

Nathan, The first bag I tried was the fast pack and it was too small to take two lenses let alone 5.

Wish I'd seen this thread sooner or I would have suggested the Kata R-103. Absolutely great bag, fits everything in my sig plus a laptop and is built like a tank without being uncomfortable. If you ever consider changing the bag, give this one a look at :)
