Landscape photography in south east england....

Landscape's not my game, however...

You're not going to get great sweeps of craggy mountain vistas, to be sure, so I suspect you may have to work on a little more intimate level.

There's always the coast, to begin with (Seven Sisters being the prime example)

Being a Scot I do struggle with the landscapes in the south east. They're not exactly what you could call "dramatic" but they have their own style.

Somewhere like Samphire Hoe is very specific to the SE and is interesting in its own way. I also love Dungeness which is stunning and bleak and very thought provoking, I find. (Plus the Pilot pub does good fish and chips ... Or so I hear). I also love the White cliffs above Dover docks and the Sandgate promenade.

You've also got historical landscapes such as hever castle, Leeds castle, Dover castle (and tunnels) and sissinghurst castle. There are also chalk figures such as the crown at Wye and the horse near folkestone which add something different to the landscape.

You're not going to find stunning rolling hills and the drama of places up north. But there are a whole host of very different land- and sea- scapes!

You've just got to look a bit harder in the south east. As well as loads of coastal opportunities there's plenty of woodland and the gentle rolling hills of the North and South Downs.

in nutshell, is it possible?

There numerous opportunities in SW (somerset & dorset etc), up north you have lakes and the dales.

But is there anything in the south east?

Have a heart - I'm in Cambridge - the boring landscape capital of the world. Driving for all of 70 mins in any direction gives excellent results, but before then you have to be content with pancake flat fields of oilseed and the occasional drainage ditch.

I went to see my parents in Sheffield and had a photogasm - they have these things called hills and lakes and the odd waterfall and valleys. And nobody was trying to convert them into luxury flats.

I live on the north coast of Kent. Not much here, but around the coast on the east, you have Broadstairs, Sandwich, etc. Not great landscapes, but some interesting sea views, seals, wildlife, etc. We have some nice gardens, too. However, I'll admit that nothing is too great....:'(

I'm in Sandwich!

I agree with above (also Scotney castle) and also check out Viking and Botany Bays, especially at Dawn.

I think that sometimes we look but do not see. The south east has a wealth of photo oppertunities.

Always nice to see a pic of mine posted in a random thread =).

I have to say I agree with you Noopz, I find the southeast hard to get landscapes out of.

Sometimes we don't look and don't see, we just ask on internet forums instead. You are right, there's a wealth of photo opportunities in the south east, or indeed anywhere, people just need to go and find them.

I wish people would stop being so reliant on others to tell them where to photograph. Pick up some maps, or a book of walks (I recommend this series) and go exploring. See what you find.

Do the people who reckon there's landscape opportunities everywhere fancy coming to the Fens and finding it? ;)

You will not be out of breath climbing the hills to get that stunning sunset.

Best wishes, Mark

Living in essex, I feel your pain. Sure there are still some interesting stuff but nowhere as dramatic or interesting as the stuff in sw or up north.

You just have to drive longer distances and look a bit harder. I havent really done much photography in essex since I moved. There is nothing I fancy within 30 mile radius...

well Constable, quite possibly the finest landscape artist of all, did most of his work in the south east, if he managed ok then im sure there are one or two places of interest :) Check out Dedham for a start.

I can recommend the Kent Coast, Weald of Kent and the South Downs-Sussex

I'm in the same town as you, and know exactly what you mean - There isn't that much locally.

Keep planning a trip to either Mersea or Walton to investigate there, but the price of diesel is putting me off !

Bob Davis does alright for himself working out of the fens. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobdavis/

For further inspiration with regard to producing interesting work out of limited and seemingly unremarkable space, check out Chris Tancock's series "beating the bounds" http://www.christancock.com/prodimages/Bounds_2.html and Colin Campbell's "Bruiach Burn" project http://www.flickr.com/photos/bruiach1/sets/72157623891383298/

Thanks for that Matt - those last two links are particularly inspiring for me. I have been thinking of something like that on the coast where I live (two minutes walk), really must start that now.
