I'm brand new with a brand new D3100. It comes with the kit 18-55mm VR lens.
One of the reasons I decided on a DSLR was I spend alot of time in the mountains. So, could you give me some pointers as to which lens would suit landscape shots?
Nothing too expensive... Cheers

there is nothing wrong with the 18mm of your kit lens

i would suggest buying a CPL [circular polarising lens] to enhance the sky tones

It depends

What end of your lens are you using? 18mm or 55mm? You can do landscape with any lens. Are you getting too much in the frame or not enough?

I've upgraded my kit lens on my d3100 to a Sigma 17-70mm and it has been a big upgrade! With the same settings, the sigma seems much sharper.

I've also got a sigma 10-20mm ultra wide angle lens which is also amazing.

As above, it depends.. I spent last weekend in the Bavarian mountains with the full frame equivilant of a 45mm and 90mm lens and wishing I had something much longer to frame the shots I saw.

Take what you've got, see how you go. When you know what you want to do differently, that is the time to decide what you need to do it.

I'd recommend an inexpensive tele-photo to go with your 18-55. That way you can experiment with what kind of focal length you like to take landscapes at (people do it differently, you can shoot landscapes at pretty much any focal length as said above, it all achieves different effects).

The nikkor 55-200mm VR is much praised as an inexpensive companion to the 18-55mm, in your shoes I'd start off with this :).

Got my eye on a Hoya one

I haven't even took my camera outside yet, I just assumed I would need a different lens.
I'll give my kit lens a go... Cheers

The danger is that you can easily fall into the trap of equipment collecting rather than taking photographs....get out with your kit lens and enjoy learning about what you want out of your new hobby before chasing new gear....

Landscape lens;

Check out manual lenses by 'Samyang', they do a choice of quite a few lenses in their range, but look at either their 14mm f/2.8 or 24mm f/1.4 lenses, meant to be excellent quality for little money, but they are all manual focus, no autofocus.

Go to 'UK Digital' via the web, they have photo's/info/prices re Samyang lenses etc, I spoke with them today, very helpful.

I've just ordered a 14mm and a 35mm Samyang for my Canon kit.
