Yes
I've got to go to the director of a large company's house and make sure his collection of cars are kept clean !!

Hours to suit me and I get paid £7ph.

He's got 4 cars, a BMW convertible, an X5, a Range Rover and a Ferrari. :bonk:

He's about 6 or 7 miles from me so I can cycle too !! :)

Bout time I had a spot of luck !! :D

That's ok i suppose, considering a professional detailer will spend probably 12-15 hours on a car and charge £250-£300, which works out at something like £20ph

I'll offer my services to get them dirty for you if you like :)

Thanks everyone,

I've not been able to work really for the last 4 years because of having to look after my 2 lads. The eldest is in school now and the youngest in nursery. Its really hard to land a job that suits in terms of hours and flexibility.

I'll be doing 10 hours a week minimum, 5hrs x 2 days. It'll earn me £70 a week which hopefully means we wont have to tuck into the credit card half way through the month which is whats been happening since we moved house.

Without wanting to start a sob story, we've struggled for the last 3 years, so this is quite a big move forward for us. Hopefully, things will get better from here on !!

Gary, I've read before about special shampoos for cars like this, before we had the kids I was a valeter for nearly 8 years so I'm no stranger to it, but thanks for the advise !!

I'm sorry, but this "detailing" lark I just dont get.

What is it ? glorified valeting ?

All I've got to do is wash and hoover them once a week, maybe the odd polish or wax.... Its nothing drastic...

£300 for 15 hours cleaning, the words 'daylight' and 'robbery' spring to mind..

None of the above aimed at you divine, and I'm not being nasty, I just dont get it...

A lot more to it than that - I used a company called Polished Bliss for 6 months, every month. They measure the paint, ensure its the correct thickness. They guarentee no swirls (which destroys paintwork), they are absolutely anal when it comes to heeping a car clean. I have seen them with a TOOTHBRUSH cleaning parts of the car I didn't know existed.

They also buy WAX which costs £2K per tub (think medium sized pot of paint for size), and this is used to weather protect the job.

The cars look MUCH BETTER than new, no doubt about it.

Simple fact is, get swirls on his ferarri, you will devalue it. Not being a dick, all I am saying is be careful!!!

Gary.

To a degree, but it basically restores the paintwork to a condition better than new in most cases and protects it better.

That's a pretty good example of what can be achieved by just a 'hobbyist' detailer working, by hand on his neighbours car. A professional would use rotary polishers etc.

Be very careful how you clean that Ferrari though, get swirls on it by using a cheap sponge and he'll shoot you on the spot :p

congrats on the job, what ferrari is it?

Other cars are an X5 :gag:, a range rover sport :gag: and a BMW 645 Ci :|

Been at the job nearly 2 weeks now and can say I love it.

Proper laid back and hours to suit.

Is that an Italian plate on the Prancing Horse??

Yes, I pinched the photo from the world wide interweb, the one I keep clean is exactly the same though, (bar the italian number plate and left hand drive):D

Well done mate, one word of advice, get onto www.detailingworld.co.uk and REALLY ask for advice, cleaning a ferarri is NOT a Bucket and Sponge job, do it wrong, knock £10,000+ off the value of his car, seriously. Consider cheap insurance too, get him to pay for it.

Gary.

But Ive always washed mine with a bucket and sponge ...........:help:

exactly, in my opinion its people trying to "seperate" themselves from the run of the mill car wash/valet so they can in theory charge more for the same service (although i presume we're talking top end valeting here so more than just a wipe over with a dirty spunge and a bucket of hot water).

its like me calling myself a 'picture capturer' rather than a photographer:shrug:

I'm glad somebody agrees with me. I thought I was the only one. :bonk:

For the record, I washed the Ferrari with a bucket of soapy water and a sponge. . . . .

Its still there so it must have worked.

With just a bucket and sponge you will get swirls, I always power wash the muck off first, instead of using it as a grinding paste.
My car has never had polish on it, most consumer polishes have a fine abrasive in the ingredients which do create swirls. I have only ever used Auto Glym Extrashine on my car and the paintwork is as good as the day it came out of the showroom and is 7 years old.

Sorry to be blunt, but its like saying you can go to McDonalds and get a meal which compares to something Gordon Ramsay cooked up.

:bang::bang::bang:

If I saw THIS on my ferarri, I would run you over with it

BUCKET AND SPONGE:

Do that to a top end ferarri and knock 30K of the price tag, your choice though, its not your money getting wasted :bonk:

One other thing, get a small stone in your sponge, and your cushy job will turn into a cushy bill! You got a lot of advice in this thread, and I think you have gone and ignored probably the one thing which could stop a fantastic car getting ruined!!! 1 stone on your sponge, you will scratch that car like nothing else, and when a ferarri is scratched, it will costs thousands and thousands of pounds to repair!!!!

Sorry for being a knob, but I feel very passionate about this :D

Gary.

I remember putting my car in to be serviced with the strict instructions not to wash it afterwards.
I went off it when I discovered some junior had been let loose with a bucket and sponge on it and I am not talking Ferarri here I only have a Honda but I do look after my cars.

I had my car detailed every month for 6 months, I stopped due to cost, but it is INSANE how much a good detail brings out in a car.

My Lotus has gone down hill big time, covered in swirls etc, and now if I want a detail, I will need to fork out for a correction first.

The damage people do without realising!

Gary.

I take it you are on the "detailing world" forum Gary, I am not a member but I do like visiting it.
Some may scoff and call it nonsense but I am very careful how I wash my car, I foam it first to lift the muck/dust leave it for 5 minutes, power wash it, then carefully use a sponge turning it and rinsing it all the time and if dropped it gets binned and replaced with a new one.

Oh and importantly I start at the top and work my way down to the sills.

A good way not to get swirls is to put your car through one of the car washes with the revolving brushes.
No swirls..............because all the scratches are in the same direction:eek:

Not meant to be rude, but yup ... put a car through one of these auto-carwash and watch your resale value drop like a rock ... heck, while at it, may as well put the Ferrari through that! :bang::bonk:

plus you;ll end up with less to polish as it;ll take off any extranious bodywork additions, like wing mirrors, ariels and spoilers :)

food in mcdonalds
food in a michelin star restaurant
still both food, just at different ends of the spectrum

therefore any method of cleaning a car is valeting IMHO although yes i fully understand the fact that these people go to some serious lengths to get a result they (and the customer) are happy with, its still cleaning! :D

"a rose by any other name is still a rose"

not polished my car for ages, that said i hacked the moss of it last weekend :schtum: will have to get the autoglym out next time i think :)

But the problem is, its not just cleaning. its damaging vs cleaning. Using a bucket and sponge to clean a car will damage it by introducing swirling.

Detailing, the whole point is to take the car beyind what a new car would be like, better than new!!
