I've got a week booked in a cottage near Settle from the 11th October and not knowing the area, I would appreciate some places to get good shots.

Obviously from where I am based the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District will be the main areas, but I need to find some good locations that don't involve too much walking. I had a metal hip put in about six months ago and I'm not quite ready to test it out by "Yomping" and to top it all the missus has a broken foot  (plaster will be off the day before we go).

I have the car so travelling is not a problem.

I have no knowlege of The Lakes so can't help you there.

The Dales, well you could try Aysgarth, they filmed part of the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves there (the bit where they fought in the river).

Some good landscapes at Dent which is not far from you. If I were in your shoes I would definately try to get to Gordale Scar, it is a walk but not very far, probably 15 mins on good solid ground.

Coverdale is spectacular especially when driving from Kettlewell to Leyburn on the back roads.

I could go on all day; Hubberholme, Jervaux Abbey, Middleham, anywhere to be honest. The view from Buttertubs Pass on a clear day will beat any, anywhere in the world imho.

I am very jealous. We go every year to The Yorkshire Dales, we love it.

Further to the Dales, certainly agree about Aysgarth and Gordale Scar, if you go midweek to Gordale Scar (near Malham) you can usually park quite near to Gordale Scar, there is a few parking spaces. You can also park quite near Malham Tarn also.

If you go to Aysgarth, please make a trip to West Burton, it's only 3 miles away, it has a delightful little waterfall, and you can park right next to it.

Ribblehead viaduct is worth a visit-church at Horton in Ribblesdale also.

Stainforth Force-again you can park close by.

There's the Falconry Centre close by.

Skipton-castle and canal-Embsay steam railway (need to check if running)

Hawes and Hardraw Force, Castle Bolton.

Bit further is Richmond with it's castle and river falls (parking next to)

If you get to Masham-have a look round the 'Black Sheep Brewery' (check opening times), it's one of the last 'open vat' breweries in the UK-well worth a visit.

The Settle-Carlisle railway is worth a trip, diesel trains though-but goes through some spectacular scenery.

If you need any map references just shout, and I'll get them together.

Thanks for the replies.

Aysgarth and Gordale Scar seem to be definates, I can leave the wife in a pub and give my hip a little test. Richmond Castle and Jervaulx Abbey were already on my list as I'm bit of a history buff (which translates to sad old git ) and I never miss the chance to shoot castles and ruins.

As for the rest I will have to get the map out and plan a route to take in as many as possible.

Edit: Does the Black Sheep Brewrey give out free samples

Flippin' heck, I forgot all about West Burton. You really do have to go there, its my dogs favourite swimming pool! Nice pub next to the village green as well.

another vote for Gordale Scar, although not the easiest place to get great photo's

adding to that.. i have been there a good few times over the years and always come away scratching my head about my mediocre results
then I watched a TV program with David Dimbleby and he was talking about how the great painters of years gone by always struggled to bring out the 'drama' of the huge rocks

and then finally one famous painter from yesteryear painted what is supposedly iconic picture of the place - but half of the stuff in the painting was 'added' rather than being there
which kinda stuck the boot in as far as I could see

but no doubt about it - the place is begging to be photographed
and nearby is 'Janets foss' a nice waterfall and stream
look forward to seeing pics from your trip
cheers Chris

If you can manage it, Catbells (made famous by Wainwright) is incredibly rewarding for not too much effort - although a metal hip and a broken foot may hinder your ascent!
If you fancy something with a bit less altitude then Keswick (I think!) is nice to take a stroll around with some lovely shops.

To add to all the suggestions the scenery around and between Hawes and Leyburn is stunning, also on the way from Settle to Hawes there are caves to explore (guided)

Have fun :D

The Dales has been well covered so I'll leave it at that, the Lakes....anywhere around Keswick, great mountains & lots of photo opportunities, Buttermere must be one of the most photographed places

Malham Tarns only about 5 miles from Settle and the walk to the base is reasonably easy, lots of steps to the top though. Great pub too.
Ullswater area in the Lakes is slightly less busy than Keswick area but almost as scenic.

Thanks for all the replies.

It's beginning to look like I might have to book another week for the lakes at some time, as there seems to be more than enough to fill my week on the dales, which is good less travelling more time snapping.

All I've got to do now is pray daily to the great weather god (October - Yorkshire Dales )

We have taken photographs of almost all the Dales from Airdale to Swaledale and up into County Durham; Ernie was born and brought up there. To get an idea of some of the places mentioned you can take a look at our website. The URL below is the section where the Yorkshire Dales photos are. If you have time look at the beginning of the British Isles section where we have just posted some photographs of the County Durham/ Yorkshire border area.

Tarn Howes is a great place especial in the autumn. National trust property, gets 300,000 visitors a year. Car park nearby Need to watch the time of day as the surrounding mountains tend to limit the amount of time it gets illuminated by the sun. If there is any that is.

Here's a link to the NT seb site

Also if you do go to Masham, there's the Theakston's Brewery as well. I town 2 brewery's Can't be bad
