We're off for a week to Lake Garda on the East Coast near Malcesine on Saturday.

I wondered if anyone had any tips on places to go, to see and shoot :)?

I'm sure the Lake itself will provide a good many opportunities but if anyone knows any hidden gems in the area worth looking at I'd be grateful for any info :)

Grazie :D

I don't know if you know this, John.... but HDR is banned in Italy! :D

Oi Janice just 'cos its your Birfday!!!

And you may have noticed I HDR less these days ;)

Ah well looks like I'm a TP first out there :)

Went to lake garda AGGGESSS ago, it's REALLY nice.

One place to visit, and is a must, is Verona. Very nice town, rather historic, and about an hour and a quarter away from Malcesine.

I went with a brass band, so we only got to stop off at the little tourist places, but then again, it was really nice, and it was sunny every day :).

There is lots to do, watersports, climbing, walking, cycling are the most popular pursuits. I can highly recommend the wine tour that we did, through Thomson, it was the wine tasting tour. They take you to the place below, you get a souvenir glass to keep and about 6 different wines to try and also some nibbles, you canm then buy your own wine and also order and have it delivered to home. Definitely worth the money.

Excellent thanks Ant :) - I think we have a free trip there thrown in! :)

I think by the time you get there most of the colourful flowers might have died?

In Malcesine you want to go on the cable car views over the lake but walk along the mountain and look over the other side (more nice views)
Limone, Riva, Sirmione and Bardolino are worth visiting using the boats.

Check out the Dolomite mountains if you fancy a trip and weather is good. I prefered Verona to Florence.

And most importantly eat the ice cream and drink the local wines

Dave.

Oh, and if you go to the opera in verona, it'll be about 3 hours long, and you're not supposed to go to the loo when it's on, even if you're bursting... (Damn people selling beers instead of ice cream)

The Dolomites to me are on the must see list,on the way up you stop for warm apple strudel, and the scene is from sound of music with wooden chalets.
Up in the Mountains they stop at a cable car and you can go to the top,But ask the courier if it is running,i,s still a good trip if it,s not,but take a packed lunch (necessity)as they tell you that a restaurant serves good meals, but one of the two restaurants was closed for the summer and it was absolutely impossible to get a meal in time for all the diners.

Venice is a long trip ,but the trip well worth it for the fantastic shots.

I,m envious m8 ,really am.

This is my fav part of Italy :)
Coupe of places worth a visit if you can.

Lake Ledro - Head to Riva Del Garda and take the SS240 towards Storo. At the top of the pass is Lake Ledro. It drains into Garda producing Hydro electricity which is then used to power the pumps that refill the Lake Ledro at Night!

Lake Idro is mush smaller but has a great pizza resturant overlooking the northern end (can't remember the name but its on the SS237 before you get to the Saint Antonio turn.

Head further north to see Lake Santa Massenza - take the SS45bis road towards Trento. The road is really low and close to the lake and I'm sure there is a castle type building jutting out into the lake that might make a good subject?

Lastly, make sure you visit both sides of the lake as they are totally different.

Have a great time and can't wait to see your shots :) I am very jealous!

Thanks Ant (again :)) Towershot and Kingy! Looks like I'll be printing this lot out for reference :)

Can't wait! :)

We stayed in Riva when we went on an Opera (Verona) + Lake holiday. There is a pretty good market and some nice shops in Riva + a lovely lakeside area. Also, Limone is picturesque and well worth looking at through the lens.

It is possible to get to Venice for the day too.

Would love to go again some day...

Anthony.

Just to round this one off....and again thanks for all the pointers folks!

In our week we got to see the Dolomites - amazing place and a cable car ride up to a 9,000 ft peak was probably the highlight of my holiday!

We did Verona - which was quaint and very doable in a day!

We ferried across to Sirmione (very busy) and Limone (very pretty) on two separate days

We spent a day in Malcesine and saw a fantastic concert featuring 4 local bands

And we witnessed what seemed like most of the 10,000 Harley Davidson riders who were at Garda for a European rally!

And chilled in the odd harbour town with a glass of vino or two :)

All in all a good break and a great place! Highly recommended.

Pictures to follow!
