Lake Garda Lens

Hi this is my first post and dont want to tread on anyones toes but if any one can give me some lens advice . I am off to Lake Garda late may and would like a lens suggestion . Its to go with a canon 550d kit which came with a 18-55 .

What kind of photos do you want to take?
It's a bit of a wide question to just ask for lens recommendations for a place.

As above post, tell us what you will be shooting, (or hope to shoot) where etc, how much you want to spend, then we can better inform you what to get.
As I have just said in another thread, (in fact copied and pasted most of it) the 55-250mm IS is a cracker of a lens, shoots well above it's price, (I have one) and has a decent top end for a beginer. They can be had 2nd hand for around £115/130 and new for £150 ish.
As long as you dont want to shoot a duck on the other side of the lake, it should suit. It's light, short when retracted, good IQ and easy to use.

thanks for the quick reply's. £300 is the budget . Looking at mainly landscapes and the odd portrait. usual holiday snaps . Just getting into photography, people say the scenery is lovely. maybe going to Venice and Milan as well so the odd pic of buildings.

Well your 18-55 (IS?) is ok for landscapes/architecture the 55-250 will give you a bit of reach!
The sceenery IS stunning! Venice smells, Milan is better. Watch out for the leather jacket sellers, just say NO!
Loved Garda when we were there a couple of years ago.
 
can you recomend something a little wider , also the 18 -55 is not IS . Thanks for the advice as well .Cheers
 
I've been to both Lake Garda & Lake Maggiore with my canon 450/Tamron 17-50 and found this to be a great combo for the tyoe of shooting which i'm interested in (landscapes/architecture mainly, with some portrait/people shots). We also had a day trip to Verona and again, this combination worked fine for me. Enjoy your holiday.

On DPReview it seems to be almost de rigeur to ask "What lens for Europe?" etc. before any travel with a camera :)
 
I was in Limone last May and will be heading back there in May this year.
I'm taking my two kit lenses for my Nikon, 18-55 and 55-200. They should be more than enough.
The views across the lake can be very hazy at that time of year, looks like smoke in the air. Early morning is a great time to wander around with your camera.
If you are up the north end of the lake you have to go to Malcesine and take the cablecar ride up Malto Baldo, cost was E18 last year but well worth it for views of the lake and the next valley over. Some amazing colours on the small little lakes and still some snow up there. There's a great cafe on the top and for Italy the prices were very competitive.
I got some great shots of buildings mornings and afternoons.
I'll be off to Verona for the day during my stay.

So to summarise you are after something wider for landscapes and something suitable for portraits on a budget of £300?

It may be stretching things a little but if you're happy to buy used, you may just be able to pick up a Canon 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 10-20....

I'm off to Lake Garda (Riva del Garda), Verona and Venice in three weeks.
I will take my Nikon 24-120 f4 VR & expect it to cover most eventualities.
 
Sigma 10-20mm, once you own a wide you will find you use it alot for city & landscape stuff.
 
Went to Lake Garda a few years ago and enjoyed it.
Would definitely recommend Venice for a day, lots to photograph and we didn't find it smelly. Easily do-able by train from places like Peschiera at Lake Garda.
 
When I was there touring northern Italy a couple of years ago I took an 18-200 & a 10-20. Did the trick nicely...
 
If you're looking for a lens other than a kit one, I'd suggest making sure that you get one that does not rotate the end when focusing.

Then you will be able to use a graduated neutral density filter which will IMO be one of the best things you can do to improve landscape type photography.

Whilst they're not the best in the world I would look at the Cokin P system filters as they are good value, and I would go with a 'hard' ND grad if you can. You can the stack multiple ones and even use the polariser filter too if required.
