:help:Hi Folks

I am going down to the Lake District for a week's holiday on Saturday coming and I wondered if anyone could give me some help as to the best places to get photos of wildlife etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about wildlife but if you are fit and able, then get up Skiddaw its a great walk but pretty easy and spectacular views.

If you go to the north end (Keswick) and then head a little way north up the A591 there is a NT carpark (on your right as you head north) that has loadsa red squirrels and you can see the only (?) English Osprey .

My father in law lives in Threlkeld and I often visit Ashness Bridge (http://www.ukattraction.com/cumbria+lake-district/ashness-bridge.htm), Castlerigg Stone Circle (http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/casstone.htm), the Bowder Stone (http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/bowder.htm), Blencathra (http://www.blencathra.org/), Whinlatter Pass (http://www.thecumbriadirectory.com/Cumbria_Countryside/Passes/Whinlatter_Pass/Whinlatter_Pass.php), Suprise View (http://www.keswick-launch.co.uk/walks_ashness.htm), Aira Force waterfall (http://www.visitnorthwest.com/lakes/aira.htm) and the old railway line from Threlkeld Village down into Keswick which is a 2 - 3 mile walk but well worth it as there is plenty of wildlife, tunnels & bridges all beside a wonderful river.
You also get a great meal at the Horse and Farrier pub (http://www.horseandfarrier.com/) in Threlkeld at the base of Blencathra (my father in law works there so say hello to Keith).
This should be enough to be going on with.

Dunno if you want anything in captivity - but South lakes Wildlife park is meant to be pretty good too!
anth.

Head west to the coast. You'd get some decent seabird shots (possibly even Puffins if you're lucky!!) between Whitehaven & St Bees (St Bees head & Barrowmouth). There's always the Golden Eagles at Haweswater too!! In terms of views, I prefer the top of Great Gable down the Wasdale valley to Skiddaw (sorry SteveO) :)

Once again many thanks. I have certainly got a lot to digest. I will be staying on the shores of Lake Windermere near a place called Far Sawrey.

Not wildlife, but if you have time while in that neck of the woods, it
's worth heading East to Ribblehead and getting a shot or two of the famous viaduct....

Steve

Apologies for putting this in the wrong topic but as it is animals and nature that is my particular photographic interest, it seemed sensible to me to use that forum. I appreciate all the help and responses I got from everyone

just got back - went to Bassentwaite water and saw the osprey (but no red squirrels).
Also went to Walney Isaland and walked through the herring and black headed gulls nest area - that was rather special

Well in Windermere its a wee bit trippery, but for nice morning landscapes elterwater, or rydal are beautiful. View over Coniston can be really nice as well.

For Wildlife, leighton Moss (think dseered has posted stuff from there), Walney is really good at the mo, S Lakes Wildlife park isn't too far off. St Bees is good too for whale / seal etc spotting but is not too easy to get to from where you are. Except over the pass.

Think you'll find most places are pretty good, but try to get to spots before the "tourists", they usually turn up about 10am (when B&B has kicked them out).

Red Squirrel hide is at thirlmere. Think I've posted the grid coords of the place before on here, but have a google and you'll find it. If not just shout.

And if you see a red astra flying down the road.... get out my way I'm trying to work ;)

Recomend a short walk up 'latterbarrow' on the west side of windermere. The panorama is amazing from the top (fairfield all the way to Scafell). Well worth the 15min climb!

Well, I have to say - previous posters have pretty much covered many potential places of interest.
To add :

Eskdale is very nice, I always enjoy it. (with nice ratty (mini railway)) http://www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk/
There is a sealife world type of thing at Windermere which is worth going. http://www.aquariumofthelakes.co.uk/
Muncaster castle is also very nice and has a bird of prey centre and gardens. http://www.muncaster.co.uk/web2006/index/index.html
Buttermere and Crummock are good for walks. http://www.visitcumbria.com/cm/butterm.htm

You can always come to cockermouth too

Hello from Kendal in South Cumbria!

There are lots of places here where you can see wildlife, but it's a little hit and miss, I suppose, as to whether you get lucky. One thing you might like to pursue is red squirrels - there are a number of pockets in the county where you can see them - and I would think your chances would be high if you research the best locations.

For guaranteed wildlife, there's always the wild animal park at Dalton. ;)

Have a great trip...
