Hi peeps I'm wanting to take my wife away for a short break to the lakes which will involve walking and wildlife spotting!
I no nothing about this area do could anyone recommend an area to go??
Cheers

To be honest mate, you can't go wrong with anywhere in the lakes, it's beautiful everywhere and plenty of wildlife around. North lakes is slightly better though.

The normal is windermere. Ambleside and Keswick all really nice towns. lots of walks in the lakes and cafes / restaurants

I do like the walk down the far side of Grasmere to Rydal Water.

I ran that at the weekend. In fact, I ran from Grasmere to Staveley (around 13 miles). Beautiful day... just wish I could find a way of running with my DSLR as there were some great opportunities along the route. Rather different today, mind...

Hi
All good advice above. I'd avoid the towns of Windermere and Bowness as these are pretty overrun with tourists. Also the weather is notoriously fickle but it tends to be better on the eastern side - so if it's raining in Langdale, try heading for Ullswater.
A couple of other ideas to throw into the mix:
The Roman fort on top of Hardknott pass is spectacular.
Walk around Derwent Water from Kewick.

Enjoy -it's a special place.

There seems to be plenty of options, thanks very much we always go away for our anniversary which is in nov, the past 2 years we have been to Skye but its a hell of a trek from Bristol+ the wildlife is non existent!!
Plenty of time to find the perfect location thanks!!

Try Dodd wood nr Bassenthwaite for the Osprey view point and loads about the feeders including Red squirrels

Found a lovely little place to stay in Bowness overlooking the lakes!! Hope this is an ok choice..
Thanks all for your ideas.

im off to the lakes for a week at the end of july. Got a B&B in Keswick booked. If you like your walks i can reccomend the Wainright books. Theyre almost works of art.

Actually if there are any locals here, how do you pronounce it, is it Kes-wick or a silent W, Kessick?

Hi, I own a small hotel (Ravenstone Lodge) in the Lakes about 4 miles north west of Keswick & spend about 50% of my time up there so I know the area quite well. I would certain recommend the northern Lakes as they are much quieter than anywhere south of about Grasmere but with some fantastic scenery. About from my local lake, Bassenthwaite Lake my other favourite areas are around Derwentwater in addition to which Aira Force, a series of waterfalls close to Ullswater off some great photo opportunities pretty well whatever the weather. Have a great holiday!
