Ladies please. Would you pay £299 for a hair dryer?

My daughter wants a new hairdryer, she saw the advert for a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, but at £299 I politely told her where to go. Am I being unrealistic? I mean, I have seen a hairdryer in Argos for £29. What would she be getting if I paid the extra £270 that the £29 one can't do?
 
The Dyson one blows magical pixie dust over the hair of the person, it means they never go grey...

Or it's just wildly overpriced, and another example of Dyson selling stupidly priced goods ;).
 
I guess a lot of it is to do with the development costs, but also style comes into the equation. Apple products?
 
Absolutely not!
 
I'd raise an eyebrow, but wouldn't dismiss it. If it gets us out of the house on time once then its worth the money. Definitely wouldn't look in the cheaper end of the market. There are differences in how quick it heats up, cools off, strength of blowing, direction, protection to get your own hair in it, and so on.

I think Apple would have to charge £3000 for the iPhone to be comparable to this plastic hairdryer costing £300..
 
No but it's a hair dryer and I'm a man. If I had the dough, I'd buy one of those dyson fans.

Style? Have you seen it, I just had to google it and it looks like a mallet. Other than making it look nothing like a conventional hair dryer, I'd say very little money was spent in the styling department.

Sorry but more money than sense.. It's a hair dryer for goodness sake
 
Mrs Nod has waist length hair and doesn't use a hair dryer. If she DID use a dryer, her hair wouldn't be as long since most of them do it no good at all! If she wants it wavy, she plaits it while it's damp and lets it dry naturally. Oh, she's a time served hairdresser, among her many talents!

Same here, although mine is no longer waist length it's still long and I can't remember the last time I used a hair dryer

Mine was almost waist length around 30yrs ago back in the days of the NWOBHM ;), I never used a hair dryer neither.
 
Blimey! I had no idea they could be that expensive! I have long hair and my 20 year old hairdryer must come out around once a year when I REALLY can't avoid it. Hair drying always seems like wasted time to me. You can't read or watch telly whilst doing it and hair dries on its own anyway. Mind you, I only put make-up on a couple of times a year, so I suspect I am not the target audience for a £300 hairdryer!
 
Best hair dryers to get are salon professional ones. They're designed to be used day in and day out and just work for years. Mine was about £35 30 odd years ago so I'd guess you'd be looking at £70 minimum for a salon level one now at least. It still works perfectly. I still have a spinny one from the 1950s but I wouldn't dare use it. It still works but it's about as powerful as a cat yawn.

Experiences differ. Three girls in the house, I've seen the differences in quality between the various models over the years. And not just hair dryers. But sure I guess that's why every salon uses a £29 Argos model as well, after all it is just a hair dryer. ;)
 
image.jpeg I remember my grandmother, an ex-hairdresser, using something very much like this at home in the 60's and 70's.

I imagine it would have been an expensive hairdryer when new!
 
Mum had what my memory tells me (and my memory sometimes tells me fibs) was the same model. Extremely heavy and could give you a sunburn if you sat under it. Warmed me up a treat after snowball fights!

Some years back (close to 20 at a guess) I had almost waist length hair but it was a PITA on a bike with a pillion passenger - it either got more tangled than the web politicians weave if left free or would beat them up when plaited! Much easier these days with a #1 buzz cut every few weeks. Just had it done after 5 weeks and it's a weight off my mind!

I thought the main point of the Dyson was that it doesn't damage hair?
 
As I said, MOST of them do it no good at all. Not sure how anything that heats it can fail to damage it though.

I wonder what she thinks about the money you spend on camera gear. I mean, you get brilliant pictures from your phone, so why do you need all that camera gear? :D

Exactly.
I still used the dryer I used in the salon. Clippers and scissors too for that matter.
Dryer and clippers are both approaching 20 years old. Good care has been taken with them.

It directs heated dry air onto the hair.
Used regularly it will damage just as much as a £20 Remington.

Because I only wet shave mi bonce a couple of times a week & I have `stubble` where it grows. ;) (mostly grey though these days)
 
My hair dryer was about £100 a few years ago. It's definitely better quality than cheaper ones i've bought. It's quieter, never smells hot like some others i've used and it's quite a high powered one so dries my hair quickly.

In answer to the question, no I wouldn't spend £300 on the Dyson one.

We got one of those tower fans about 4 yrs ago. I think it was near £200 at the time, but they now have an updated one with filters etc............ over £400 :wideyed:
 
I wouldn't spend £2.99 on an hairdryer, but then again, I've got no hair, well not on my head anyway :)

Its good elsewhere as well :) Especially when commando.
 
I asked my wife about this. She has her own hairdressing business. She typically pays £35-40 from the wholesalers for a hairdryer. She was aware of the dyson hairdryer, she said it is supposed to be 'silent'.

I suggest you buy a professional hairdryer fro £40 and buy some ear plugs for £1.50!:)
 
Don't think my wife or daughter (long hair) have ever owned a hair drier. Wife can't be bothered with them, and my daughter reckons it's easier to just go out in the sun and let it do the job! :)
 
I'm amazed what people happily pay for a toothbrush these days - I have a basic sonicare one that was about 30 quid a few years ago but the latest ones are up to 250 quid! Do people really need 5 different cleaning modes, a "charging glass" and a "quadpacer"? o_O

All interesting.... now jump forward a few years.... daughter has power of attorney as you and the OH are not able to mange your own dosh.....

You ask daughter for the then equivalent of £2,999 for a new piece of pro glass.... "what!!!!! 3 grand for a lens....... you must be ^$&*ing joking ......I can get 10 hairdryers for that..... now go to your room and think on. I will get you that pink Vivitar point and shoot you were smiling at in the Argos leaflet that came through the door.... looked great at £29.99...."

I know that but an IPhone is the whole camera and does selfies too

And the £299 is a drop in the ocean compared to the wedding........ Believe me I know.... cough up.... she will love you even more.... till the next 'must have' - hair extentions?

My last one cost about 25% of the previous one. Both Braun. Bought the first when they were deemed " fancy" I suppose. The replacement is just the basic rechargeable one.
I agree, the price of some of them is staggering!
