It's such a shame at what's happened in La Palma, I have fond memories of the island having visited six times between 2003 & 2013. It's the best of all the Canary Islands as far as I'm concerned as I have been to all the other islands in the group.

Some photos I took there.

Did you visit the famous observatory there ? . https://www.adastralapalma.com/astronomical-observatory/

I assume this volcano just pours out lava rather than 'blow' like Mt St. Helens did in Washington state US in 1980.

It’s all that’s on the Spanish news on tv. Some of the imagery is awesome, amazing and horrific.

I didn't actually visit the observatory but I have stood on the highest point on the island several times looking down on the telescopes... There are quite a number!

Here's one.

Very interesting set. Did you feel any altitude sickness at 8000 ft. ?
Altitude sickness doesn't seem to effect me, I've been to the summit of Mount Teide on Tenerife which is over 12,000 feet. When I went to Ecuador the capital Quito is 9,350 feet above sea level (the second highest capital city in the world) some people were feeling unwell before we had even left the airport... I was fine! On that trip I went up in the Andes to over 13,000 feet, it was cold after spending a week in the Amazon Basin... otherwise no problem!

Those trips sound wonderful I was hoping to see photos from them..especially the Andes but in your Pbase I only saw the Malverns under Landscapes unless I've overlooked them. If they're there could you point me in the right direction ? Very nice butterfly Youtube too.

Hi John... I went to Ecuador on a birding holiday and I spent more time looking through my binoculars than taking photos, there are a few shots taken in the Andes in this gallery... https://pbase.com/john1946/ecuador

I am finding it hard to believe what is happening in La Palma, on my six visits to the island I spent more time where the volcano is situated than anywhere else. I absolutely loved walking the Cumbre Nuvea, it is spectacular and was so quiet and peaceful ... so much different from my backyard!

A couple of my shots.

First off..What a dramatic video of La Palma especially the footage of the three vents at the end. The photographer seemed to get quite close. When I saw the footage of the houses taken from above I thought it had been taken from a drone but with the later footage I wondered if it had been taken from a helicopter. I'll go through it again tomorrow. England v Hungary at 7.45..:) Interesting for you to stand by the volcanic ash hillside. Good shots. Agree, quite different from Herefordshire:D

What a great experience and Sani Lodge looks top class. I Googled it so I got to see the inside and the 5-star reviews. We'd planeed on going to Costa Rica for the same type of holiday but along came Covid. Never crossed my mind to go to Equador. The blue-winged Mtn Tanagers look brilliant as do the pair of Hoatzin birds. magnificent. The trapeexe artist..lol..the Kinkajou oin the twin ropes. Loved the humming birds. Had to laugh at the squirrel because I watch the one that comes into our garden a couple of times a day burying conkers. Didn't have to go to Equador to see that :D I just hope it remembers where they all are. I will.lol. You've sat right on the equator too, I see..

I was wondering if I was going to see an Andean Condor amongst your photos but I expect you'd have to go up really high to see any and with a guide, on a specialist trip I'd have thought .I see there are only 100 in Ecuador and they're red-listed birds too.

John... Thanks for a brilliant reply... the best one since I joined!

I did see several Condors but only at a distance through binoculars and a telescope.
No probs. The posts/photos deserved it. Wonderful to see the Condor even at a distance.

Aaagh ! England v Hungary..kicked off 15 mins ago :exit::D

It could go on for months according to this article. Thank goodness that scientists have the expertise to forecast eruptions giving time for evacuation. 7000 people were evacuated.

64 earthquakes yesterday largest 4.1 , plus the lava stream has changed direction towards the city in the valley , 800 people had till 10pm last night to evacuate

4.5 earthquake midday today

Awful scenes John!

I loved to visit this island and walked several hundred miles there over a ten year period. The eruptions of 1949 & 1971 were nothing like as bad as this one.

A couple of shots I took of old lava flows.

Interesting shots. Can you imagine how it's a going to look after all this when it's done its worst

Re the video clip....One word,John..Grim :( I'm guessing the white sections of the flow are those at the highest temperatures.

I haven't heard or read of any predictions. Probably because they can't predict what will happen as they have no way of measuring anything now.

La Palma is a beautiful island and I'm glad most of the island is Ok and only affected by ash and not lava. I would like to have been there more than six times as I loved going there but age and some health issues means I don't go abroad anymore.

The first Youtube clip is truly horrific. Excellent footage but horrific. The view from the kitchen window of the spewing lava is seconds long as with the shot of the swimming pool but really brings it home regarding peoples' homes. The detached house burning to destruction was awful. I'd really take issue with the choice of background synthesiser music that comes after the shot of the house buried under ash. It's almost upbeat. It needs to be something much more sombre than that. I've watched it without 'music' and I think it needs it but not what's been chosen in the section I've highlighted. Other parts are questionable, too.

Obviously, very sad for you to know that the accommodation you stayed in has been destroyed. They look lovely, the two houses. As I mentioned in a previous post we had La Palma on our 'to go to list' too..as well as Costa Rica and I wanted to see the telescope.I didn't realise there were so many, though. Having said that, apart from the plane trip which we worry about, there's no reason we still can't go when we're on top of this virus.

That's sad not being able to go abroad again :( You looked fine in the Ecuador photo on the steps of the 'monument' marking the Equator.

Wow. I love these inversions. I took one in the Forest of Dean once but nothing like this. Oh,wait.. Yes.. When we were in Madeira in 2015 when we took a trip up to the summit of Pico do Arieiro mountain. 1818m.

Lovely shots. It's tempting to want to jump into the 'cotton wool' and have a bounce.. :D

I was uneasy near the edge ,I don't like heights which begs the question..why go to 1818m ? lol
