Okay, had this lens since end of November, have been very careful with it, like anything i own. When i got the lens i looked at the lens and it looked fine, i wasn't looking in microscopic detail because being new i imagined it was fine, i checked it in daylight too and all appeared fine.

Now, i checked in daylight the other day, the hood is ALWAYS on when i go out so i never check the lens in daylight, only under normal lighting (you can tell i'm a novice) and i noticed these specs, to my horror they would not go away, i tried cleaning it with a lens cloth but no luck, i tired a bit of lens cleaner at a photography shop, no luck, i took it to another shop and also no luck, the specs remained.

I Have managed to take a picture of the specs, could you tell me what you think this is? is this dust inside the lens? if so how? i thought the l series were weather sealed?

I have my warranty still, should i send it back and see what they say? I would be very surprised if its scratches, because their are way too many of them, and they arent scratches, they're specs!

here is the link, blow it up to full resolution to see it better. oh, and i haven't been able to clean around the sides properly, kinda scared about ruining it.

thanks

p.s i don't use a filter, i never have on any lens and i have never had this problem.

Bad link....not working you need the actual URL i.e. the letters numbers and dashes where the ....... are in your above link

That or post the picture in the thread that would be much better you can do that as shown below

the basic thing is lens especially zooms are suseptable to sucking dust into them, depending on which lens you have even some L range suffer from it as not all L range lens' are totally weather sealed ;)

They won't come off, i've cleaned it many times and they are still their, its either internal or its the coating, hence the nature of this thread as i am unsure :)

i know i shouldn't worry, the images are absolutely perfect, but i get quite obsessive about this kind of stuff and it drives me madddddddddd. Does it look like their is too much dust if it is dust? sorry i must sound ridiculous lol appreciate everyones responses so far :)

Internal dust... Leave it alone and forget about it. It can be removed but it requires lens disassembly and dust will get back in there again anyways. If it's not a problem, don't fix it.

When your lens zooms it needs to move air about, to do this it sucks in air from outside. The only way to avoid this would be to hermetically seal the lens, that's a lot more airtight than 'weather sealed'.

The only way to stop it sucking in dust is to use it in a dust free environment.

In 30 years I've never had a dust free lens, and I've never been able to put poor image quality downtown a dusty lens.

Ahhh thanks guys, so it would be a bit pointless sending it back under warranty? nodody has ever really noticed the specs until i've pointed them out, and even then many people have had trouble seeing them, its just i know they're their!

I was getting quite paranoid that everybody elses lenses we're top notch and that i had somehow ruined mine or was faulty

If you guys who have had years and years under your belt and say its normal, i'll try and rest my mind.

thankyou

It won't affect the image as the lens focuses way past the point where those motes on the front lens will have any impact. Even small scratches won't necessarily impact on image quality. Take a look at this article on scratched lenses.
