L-Mount Alliance Owners Thread

A local one taken yesterday before the rain arrived today.... S5 and 20-60, focus stacked 2 images, one for the foreground stone, the second focussed on the rear stones...

That's a real beauty, we've switched from a lovely crisp frosty week with lingering snow, to a dull rainy day here today up north.

Thank you Martin glad you like the picture was a great morning today to say the least. All change now though back to dreary winter weather for the rest of the week in Derbyshire now.

Anyone ordering the new lens from Panasonic the Panasonic LUMIX S 14-28mm? Wondering how it will compare to the sigma 16-28 f2.8?
I briefly had the Sigma 16-28 but returned it and pre-ordered the 14-28. The 16-28 was OK, but I don't need the f2.8 and I'd prefer the wider FOV of the new Panasonic. Plus it's a little smaller and lighter.

There was a little fog here yesterday. It was pretty thick at home so I thought I'd head out to the local woods for some "fog in the woods" shots :) . Unfortunately the woods are on a slight hill so of course it was mostly clear when I got there! However, there was a little mist still lingering so I got a few half-decent shots. Here's a few of the better ones:

I thought the S5ii does have Live Comp? A real bummer if they've removed it.
I thought they removed it. Seem to recall reading something saying it had been removed along with 6k photo mode (could be wrong). Either way I didn't think it was enough to get me to purchase it. I will see if there is an S1 mkii or may skip this generation altogether.

Just watched a video and it now suggests that live comp is not available at launch but may come back to the S5 mkii via a software update.

I was primarily interested in the animal focus and tracking with increased burst speed, but again, having watched videos it appears the animal tracking isn't great and when using the 30 FPS mode it flicks back to the previous autofocus (so doesn't use this new fancy one).

Really like those. The last one in particular (y)

I've just ordered one. I've read so many reviews and they're all over the place. Some praise its performance, others say it's pants! So, I decided I need to check it for myself. I hope it pans out - the only other option really is the 70-200 f4, but that's quite a bit more expensive and from what I can see it's not a stellar performer either.
Well, it (70-300) arrived - and it's decentered! Left side is mushy when the rest is sharp. It's on its way back to Amazon now...

Think I might try a used 70-200 f4 next. MPB have a few "Like New" at a reasonable price and also a good return policy.

Sorry to hear that Paul.

Watched a few reviews of the 70-200 and it's supposedly okay from what I've seen. That being said, I have always wanted the F2.8 version..no idea why...and I couldn't justify that outlay. It just looks like a wonderful lens

The cost is one thing, but the weight is the bigger problem IMHO. I wouldn't want to cart it around on a day out. I don't need f2.8; so long as the optical performance is fine then the f4 version ticks more boxes for me.

Ah that's a bummer!

Yeah - but given the wide range of opinions from reviewers, I think it's clear that it's a lens with lots of copy variation, at least in the early ones.

Interestingly, the copy I received had a very low serial number - lower than a guy over on DPR who bought one a year ago. I suspect it's old stock (probably why it was £150 off!!).

I hate this "crap shoot" (as the Americans would say) on buying lenses. Hats off to Sigma who now test each and every one of their lenses before they leave the factory. I don't think any of the other volume manufacturers do it (probably Leica and Zeiss do though).

I'm waiting to see of sigma release a 70-200 for the L Mount. I would then be tempted to pick up the three art lenses covering the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 as I've not invested a great deal in lenses thus far (I have four and got two of those with the S5). I'm waiting to see what this rumoured Panasonic 100mm is (wondering if it will be a macro) prior to buying the sigma 105mm macro.

S1R is very interesting and I watch the L mount system with interest.
S1r ii has the potential of becoming a perfect camera should they choose to release it. They also need to include FF 4k or higher at 60p which S5 ii fails at. Shame

What was the main issue with the original S1R?

I have the S1 and whilst it is chunky I love it. For me, the weight and bulkiness doesn't bother me at all. My 24-105 lives on it and I just have a wrist strap attached.

I had the opportunity to buy a mint S1R at WEX a while ago. Had 2,000 clicks on it and was genuinely MINT. I love macro photography, so think a higher resolution could be good for that and landscapes?

Autofocus

Yes for moving subjects they are all pretty poor (first generation). I have a tiny dog that I love taking pictures of. Trouble is, she is about the same size as my size twelve boots, runs very quickly and the camera just doesn't keep locked on. That's why I've been using the 6k photo mode with pre burst.

Autofocus

Yes, no phase detect.

Now - this is a drag for moving subjects and possibly in low light - but the problem with on sensor phase detect AF can in some cases be banding/striping.

No risk of that with the S1R. I am really happy with the rig(s) I run but S1R grabs me more than any Sony, Canon RF, and Nikon Z bar the Z9 and omnipotent D850.

Did you order one of those £1499 S1Rs also, just to try the size?
Nah - I'm thinking that 24Mp is enough. And the weight is getting enough already without another 300g for a heavier camera!

I haven't noticed anything suspect in the R6 files and I pushed some +2 or even 3 stops. I think they are fine, definitely nothing unexpected but some noise there. My 5ds gets much weirder if you push it half that far.

AF tracking is a major deal because I would only run mirrorless setup if it is bloody good at shooting very high res and very high DR video, and the size & build quality of S1R actually makes one of it's best selling features, sort of in line with good old D850 and 5D series, but perhaps not quite up to Z9 level.
And hopefully II-series will play much nicer with MC-21, if I were to realistically consider such a move.

Tbf the contrast AF on the Mk1 S5 is pretty good in the dark, obviously not as snappy as the old A7R2 with GM glass was, but it doesn't concern me enough to think I need the Mk2 S5 that's for certain.

The way social media and manufacturer reviews make you think you need such and such a camera for one genre and something completely different for another irritates the hell out of me, learn your camera, work to it's strengths and you really can shoot anything with any camera. Yes, more FPS helps, amazing AF tracking helps, but the person behind the camera, whatever model it is, will always be the weakest link in the chain.

Yes. All of this is true and worse case you can live view manually focus zoomed in to 100%. Never fails.

That would only hold true for landscapes and other very slow genres of photography. In fact the antiquated canon 5d3 live view was already fast enough there over 10 years ago. But what about something else that has legs or wings or wheels?!

So, I've ordered a used 70-200 f4 from MPB.... Let's see how that pans out!
Well, it's arrived. And it's fantastic! Decently sharp across the frame wide open at all focal lengths. Really sharp at f8, even in to the corners. It's got a nice feel to it too - very substantial. It's a keeper. A few test shots:

Looks fine. Do you get same wide open?

How is it compared to the 24-105 F4 Paul.

I only have the 20-60, 24-105, 50 and 85 mm so always looking at lenses. I was thinking about the 14-28 also but not sure if the Sigma would be better as it's faster.

I find the 24-105 covers the vast majority of my photography needs. I sometimes miss the wider end of the 20-60 but it's those two lenses that stay on my S5 and S1. I use the others for family and pet photos as and when I'm doing them.

I’ve not really had a chance to test it much yet Adam (work is getting in the way). I bought it because it’s useful to have a longer lens for landscape use. The 24-105 will get a lot more use I’m sure, but sometimes I just need longer. But it’s notably bigger and heavier than the 24-105.

The description is confusing, but it does say Panasonic/Leica fit, which is correct for the S5.
I know, I'm thinking order it and screen shot the advert. If it doesn't fit I should be able to send it back?

Any real difference between the TT version and this one?

There's a video on YouTube comparing the two lenses, I think the reviewer said that they are both good but he preferred the 7artisans because it is wider and sharper. I think I'd be happy with either of them tbh.
