Yes
Does anyone have any recommendations for an L bracket for a manfrotto tripod/ballhead which will fit a Nikon D850 / D810, without pain for the ridiculous price for a genuine Manfrotto one?

I take it you want it for a Manfrotto QR system? Only QR style ones I have ever seen are Manfrotto branded and pricey. You could get a generic Arca Swiss L bracket and put a QR plate on the bottom but it won't be as stable as an original Manfrotto one. Other option is (if possible) to replace the QR plate of the ball head with an Arca Swiss style one, then you could use a generic style L bracket.
I have replaced a couple QR top plates with these.

And use one of these L brackets. (with a Canon 5D, no experience with Nikons sorry)

It LOOKS like the Neewer L bracket has 1/4" (standard tripod/camera mount thread) holes on both sides so would accept the Manfrotto QR plates. Other brands probably have the same system.

I use a Manfrotto 405 geared head in the studio, but I hate the manfrotto proprietary system. So I just attached an arca swiss clamp to the Manfrotto QR plate, and now it's compatible with all of my other arca swiss kit.

You haven't said which head you've got, but have you looked at converting the head to Arca Swiss?
When I got an L Bracket I had exactly the same problem with a Manfrotto 496RC2 ball head.
But instead of looking for Manfrotto compatibility I decided to grasp the nettle and move to Arca Swiss.
Bought this plate from Amazon.
It can be used to convert Manfrotto 484, 486, 488, 494, 496, 498, 054, 055 and 057 series ball heads.

That clamp will convert ANY head or plate with a 1/4" tripod screw as well as the listed ones.
