If you had the chance for a week's photography binge in/around Krakow, Sofia, Budapest or Prague, which would you choose and why?

Is there enough landscape and/or architecture to to keep me busy for the week?

I'd be going next summer, if that influences your advice

I've been to Budapest in the summer, Prague in the winter. Prague feels smaller, quainter. Budapest seemed larger, grubbier and caters to stag parties - it's the only place I've ever been propositioned directly & a number of the hotels other people from the conference were staying in had 'free' porn channels. That doesn't affect the architecture, but may affect the atmosphere.
 
Hi Nigel:)! I spent 3 weeks in Budapest in 2011. I was on a course for teachers so I can't really relate to what Toni's said above;)!

I stayed on the Buda side; the castle and the medieval quarter are lovely. Over the river, in Pest, it's all very Baroque and great if you like shopping (I don't!) Magnificent buildings! The Danube is grand and you can take trips - of course. I regret not taking a trip to one of the islands. Views of the Danube from the castle area are stupendous. I had an advantage as I had Hungarian friends who took me around. I haven't been to the other destinations you mention but I'd love to visit Prague. You could do a lot worse than Budapest!

Went to Prague when Inter-railing in the 90s - 8p a pint and some fantastic places to visit. From what I've heard it has changed beyond all recognition.
 
Went to Krakow a couple of years back. great place.
Plenty of architecture, people, auschwitz etc.
Will definitely be going back.

Krakow is beautiful with some great photo opportunities. If you go there be sure to wander the back streets of the old Jewish quarter as well as the more familiar tourist sites. I would go back in a flash if I didn't have such a bucket list.
 
I went to Sofia 6 years ago and went down to the ski runs out of ski season! Lovely! Went to the bear park and found lovely local red wine !

You'll love it. I'm quite envious having looked at the photographs of my last trip.
 
I visited Krakow some years back in May during Photo Month. It surprised me how hot it was then. Met up with around 8 other photographers there. We had a great time. Been meaning to go back again for some time. You'll enjoy the trip.

I must go back to Krakow, I went 10years ago with college before being into photography in February, it was all under snow and very beautiful. If you have the time, I would make the effort to visit Auschwitz, it's not too far outside the city. If you're into that period of history too, I would recommend watching Schindler's list before going, as you can spot plenty of places they filmed in the city, some of them not too obvious but we had a guide to point them out.

As it happens I've been to Prague and Budapest too in recent years, both nice cities certainly but would probably go back to Prague again before Budapest. Prague felt like I didn't have enough time to see everything, whereas Budapest I got the impression we had seen most of the things we wanted to. Budapest however was a much quieter city, and we visited Prague in late October, so one of the quieter months I believe.

Auschwitz is deffo on my list of places to visit while I'm there. Less than an hour away, I believe

Schindlers factory is worth a visit.
Also, if you like classical music, you should go to one of the little churches playing live music. there's lots of them dotted about. we went to one on the main square and it was great.
If you like vodka, the Wodka cafe bar is good.

I've been propositioned in all places. Both with and without my wife with me. You can have a good time in all of them.

Enjoy Krakow.
 
I'll let you know. Going to Prague in January and Krakow & Auschwitz in February

Bit late to the party I know, but might help with your future plans, I've been to Prague and Sofia. Going to Budapest in Feb.
Prague is stunning. Really good city for photography day or night. Busy though.
Sofia is cool, not sure it's as good for photography as most other places on this list. Some nice churches and a lot of Soviet architecture.
I'm interested to hear how you get on in Krakow, as I'm keen to visit. Likewise I will let you know what I think of Budapest.
For me, a week is too long for a city break in Europe, but I guess it depends on your interests and pace of life!
 
We went to Prague one January it got down to -10. Make sure you wrap up warm.

Normally, I would completely agree with you but I won the return flight in the recent Jet2 competition and I have enough loyalty points from Best Western Hotels to pay for B&B all week, so I thought "why not?".

And the more days I stay, the better chance of getting some good light (and of being propositioned :D)
 
If you have time to spare you're well placed in Krakow to take a trip down to the Tatra Mountains and Zakopane the top Polish ski resort. It is lovely in the summer with great views, especially at the top of the cable car. There is also a very famous cemetery 'The Old Graveyard' with unusual wooden adornments and a delightful 19th century wooden church.

I loved Budapest and Krakow. I've been meaning to go back to both.

In Krakow I liked the Jewish Quarter and the Salt Mines. There are a few mounds around the city worth a look if you are there for the week. I've only been to the Kościuszko Mound which has two paths criss crossing around it and gives good views over the city. The mound itself though is very impressive imho. And it sits in Paul McCartney Square. :eek: :thinking: There was a Beatles shop in one of the shopping centre's, so I think the Beatles were quite popular there. :LOL:

Been to both cities, both are great for photography, my advice is to get on a free walking tour early on your visit the guides are very knowledgeable they last around 2-4 hrs and you tip your guide at the end of the walk. You really can't go wrong.
