Can anyone help here please?

My son has a medium sized pond in the garden with about 12 Koi of around 10" in length.
We were told never to let frogs come into the pond as they eat the fish's eyes. We have never heard of such a thing...and have since found no-one else who has either.

The other day my husband noticed a Koi swimming about with a frog on its head, the fish was jumping out of the water to shake it off.
I knocked it off with a stick and that was that.

I still feel that the frog was looking for a mate as it is the breeding season and grabbed the first "frog-like" thing it could find. Nothing else has happened since.

Now we have 5 large clumps of frog spawn and at least 5 frogs in the pond. They dont seem to be a worry to the fish. I know the fish may eat the tadpoles, but that not a worry either.

Its a nice thing to have them there......... but should I get rid of them or are they ok??

I think its tadpoles more than frogs that might be a danger to your fish. Towards the end of their transformation tadpoles become carnivores and without a supply of meat they will go as far as eating each other.
If i was you id remove the frogspawn, but not worry too much about adult frogs or toads in the pond

Randy frogs will grab hold of fish as you described and can cause problems for the fish. Tadpoles are more likely to be eaten by the fish than the other way round. If it's an established pond there'll be plenty of insect larvae, etc for the tadpoles to eat as they grow. I rescued the spawn from my pond last year and raised 100 or so frogs in an old fish tank filled with green water and some plants - no food needed.

I'm sorry, but the image of a swarm of tadpoles trying to hunt and devour a koi carp had me in absolute stiches

lol! :D seeing as most of the koi are about 1' long!

But you never know! ;)

Had Koi & other fish for years with frogs in the pond and never had any problems.

Now Cats .....:bat:

Our cats seem to enjoy catching the frogs but have as yet left the fish along for 3 years.

I used to keep Koi and have seen frogs mount the head of the fish with the front legs in the fishes eye sockets or in the gills causing obvious problems to very expensive fish, this as far as i know is the only problem frogs pose to koi.

ok serious answer....

the Koi will eat the frogspawn, which increases certain chemicals in their excrement and urine, which will basically poisen them if the pond becomes over-saturated, the natural balance of the pond doesnt work properly.

/serious

So maybe best to get rid of spawn but ok to leave the few adults? The pond does have a pump and a filter.

Thanks Matty, nice to have a serious answer! ;)
